The journey is part of the pilgrimage, and the ancient traces within the rock-hewn cave are captivating. While access can be uncertain, especially off-season, the unique historical and devotional atmosphere makes it a worthwhile destination for the faithful and history enthusiasts alike.
"Only the faithful will make it.
Our trip: Rome - Bari - Foggia - Cagnano Varano
We flew in from Rome to Bari, then took an 1 hour and 20 min train ride to Foggia, then a 2 hour bus ride to Cagnano Varano. From the town square, it is an 8 minute car ride or a 48 minute walk. (We went in the month of November, when it is a hit or miss if it is open because this is the start of Italyโs slow season. There may be a phone number to call if you arrive and it is closed.)
Our trip back to Rome:
2 Hour private car ride from Cagnano Verano to Foggia
3 hour bus ride from Foggia to Caserta
2 hour fast train ride from Caserta to Rome terminal
(*Our bus to Caserta got to the train station late and we missed our train. So we booked the fast train into Rome and got in 30 minutes after our original arrival.)
Remember: only the faithful will make it."

"The mysterious and secluded place worth visiting, not only for the alleged traces of an apparition of the Archangel Michael, but above all for the people of the Stone Age and later middleaged pilgrims. They left their traces, some in the form of an early medieval fresco, some of footprints and handprints carved in the stone. An intimate rocky garden sorrounding, with prickly pears, where hermit monks once lived in their tiny hermitages."

"A must see for devotion to St. Michael the Archangel. Italyโs answer to Mt. Saint Michel in France. The audio guide very helpful."
