What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often describe the Basilica di San Valentino Terni as a beautiful and quiet church, a must-see when in Terni, especially for its historical significance and connection to Saint Valentine. While some find the basilica itself architecturally modest, the spiritual aura and the chance to visit the saint's tomb make it a worthwhile stop for many.
"Interesting church.
The first building was built in the 4th century over the tomb of the martyr St. Valentine, in an ancient paleochristian necropolis. In the following centuries the building was destroyed by the Goths and rebuilt in two distinct phases.
The current construction, however, dates back to the 17th century, when the relics of the saint were sought in the place where the first churches stood. The new basilica was completed in 1618 and the remains of the saint's body were transferred there, which in the meantime had been housed in the cathedral of Terni."
