"In thanksgiving for escaping the terrible plague that broke out across Italy in the mid-1300s, the inhabitants of Tortoreto built this beautiful church dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy. The church appears simple from the outside, but inside you can admire the beautiful 16th-century frescoes by the Renaissance painter Giacomo Bonfini da Patrignone da Montaldo Marche, restored over time and now retaining their original splendor, though some are missing. They depict scenes from the life of Jesus and the story of the Redemption of Humanity.
It would be a real shame to be in Tortoreto Alta and not visit this little gem of a church. It's always open, even in the evening."

"Don't miss a visit to the Church of the Misericordia in the heart of the old village of Tortoreto Alto, built in 1348 as a thanksgiving to the Madonna for deliverance from the plague.
The single-nave building with a cross vault preserves marvelous works by Giacomo Bonfini da Patrignone, reminiscent of the style of Piero della Francesca and Pintoricchio. The apse features an interesting scene of the deposition of Jesus from the cross, with the ancient town of Tortoreto visible in the background. Kudos to the diocese for keeping this masterpiece open and accessible daily."
