"Nice busy place 😊👍"

Hannes Höhmüller

"It was moved…
We were in Udine on Easter Monday 21st April and walking around the historic center we arrived in Piazza San Giacomo or as it is called today Piazza Matteotti. This very ancient fountain from 1542 stands out in the square which, in 1687, was moved from the corner of Via Canciani and was positioned in the center of the square. It takes its name from the designer Giovanni dè Ricamatori known as Giovanni da Udine. This fountain, connected to that of Piazza Libertà through an underground conduit, highlighted to citizens the arrival of drinking water in the city. In the photo you can clearly see that the lack of water has allowed people to sit and let their children play inside the circular pool without taking into account that this asset of Udine and the nation has around 500 years of history. Worth seeing."

ROBERTO RIVIECCIO

"In 1542, it was decided to build a fountain in the square then called Mercatonuovo. The design chosen was by the renowned architect Giovanni da Udine, who had studied in Venice with Giorgione and then worked in Rome with Raphael.

The fountain was originally located in the corner of the square facing Via Canciani, next to the statue of the Virgin. Then, in 1687, it was moved to the center.

The fountain is simple yet elegant.
It consists of a circular basin resting on triple concentric steps. Inside, a sturdy and elegant stem supports a delicately contoured basin decorated with lion figures.

Its classical composition, likely inspired by some ancient model, is an element that lends harmony to the entire square, which has always been one of the symbolic and beloved places of Udine's residents."
