What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Urbania Cathedral San Cristoforo to be a very interesting and beautiful church, rich with valuable local art. Its central location in Piazza Duomo makes it a worthwhile stop in the historic heart of Urbania. While not as grand as some Florentine churches, its unique collection of sculptures and paintings, especially the 14th-century crucifix, leaves a lasting impression.
"The Cathedral of San Cristoforo is very interesting to see. The crucifix near the 14th-century altar immediately catches the eye, as do the valuable sculptures and paintings by local artists, which are no less precious."
Giacomo Bartoletti
"The imposing Cathedral of the town of Urbania, the ancient Casteldurante, is located in Piazza Duomo in the pulsating heart of the historic center, which builds important works of art. It is certainly worth a visit."
Daniele Maria Sacchi
"The origins of the church date back to the ancient Benedictine abbey of San Cristoforo del Ponte from the 9th century. The building was renovated by the Commendatory Abbot Cardinal Bessarione in the second half of the 15th century: on this occasion the relics of the Saint were transferred to the cathedral, enclosed in a magnificent reliquary specially made in 1472, still placed in veneration during the patronal celebrations (25 July).
The church became the cathedral of the new diocese of Urbania, established on 18 February 1636. Subsequently, at the behest of the bishop Monsignor Deodato Baiardi, in the 18th century the church was again renovated in neoclassical style based on a design by the architect Giuseppe Tosi.
The façade (1870) and the new bell tower (1958) are later: however, the ancient medieval bell tower remains on the side.
Of notable historical and artistic value is the wooden Crucifix by Pietro da Rimini from 1320, and some Mannerist works by Giustino Episcopi and Giorgio Picchi."
