"Boy this place is amazing. Not easy as such to get to but it was worth it. The frescoes and art work are excellent and you can feel the history everywhere you walk and cast your eyes. Please visit these places."

Alex “Arnhemal” Castelli

"The Oratory of San Giuseppe, located a short distance from that of San Giovanni, is the seat of a confraternity built in 1515, thanks to the noble Albani family from Urbino, who made it one of the richest churches in Urbino.
After climbing the entrance steps, on the right you enter the chapel of the Nativity scene created by Federico Brandani between 1545-50.
The rectangular space is covered in pumice stone and tuff, whose scenic effect recreates the setting of a cave.
The Nativity scene is made of plaster with life-size figures.
In the representation, under a simple hut, the Virgin participates in the adoration of the shepherds, while the ox and the donkey, masterfully modeled, warm Baby Jesus. Sitting on the ground and slightly apart, is Saint Joseph absorbed in deep meditation.
The church itself is of modest height, sumptuously decorated on the walls, in the vault and in the apse basin, by Carlo Roncalli.
The high altar is made of fine marbles and, above it, there is a large marble aedicule, donated by Pope Clement XI in 1732.
It has two columns in red porphyry, from the Pantheon, and in the center it houses a statue depicting Saint Joseph, from the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
To the right of the altar there is a Madonna with Child.
In the sacristy you can admire a wooden cabinet painted with landscape views by Alessio De Marchis, a splendid example of furniture from the Marche region."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Artistry of the Nativity Scene

The Oratorio di San Giuseppe is most famous for its extraordinary Nativity scene, created by Federico Brandani between 1545 and 1550. Unlike typical nativity displays, this one is housed in a space designed to resemble a cave, constructed from pumice stone and tuff. The figures, made of plaster and life-size, are masterfully modeled, creating a deeply moving and realistic portrayal of the Holy Family's arrival. Visitors often remark on the 'scenic effect' and the lifelike quality of the shepherds and animals, all contributing to an immersive experience. Reddit+1

This unique approach to the nativity theme showcases the artistic innovation of the Renaissance period in Urbino. The detailed sculpting and the dramatic setting make it a standout piece of religious art, drawing admiration from art historians and casual visitors alike. It's a testament to Brandani's skill and the confraternity's dedication to preserving such significant works. Reddit

Baroque Splendor by Carlo Roncalli

Beyond the nativity scene, the interior of the Oratorio di San Giuseppe is a feast for the eyes, largely thanks to the work of Carlo Roncalli. He was responsible for the sumptuous decorations that adorn the church's walls, vault, and apse basin. These Baroque frescoes and stucco work add a layer of grandeur and visual richness to the space, complementing the older nativity scene. Reddit

The high altar is another significant feature, crafted from fine marbles and topped with a large aedicule donated by Pope Clement XI. This aedicule, featuring two columns from the ancient Pantheon, houses a statue of Saint Joseph. The sacristy also holds a hidden gem: a wooden cabinet painted with exquisite landscape views by Alessio De Marchis, offering a glimpse into the decorative arts of the Marche region. Reddit
