What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by Venice's unique beauty, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning architecture, with the Grand Canal and its bridges being central to the experience. While the modern Constitution Bridge offers striking views, some find its design out of place and its glass surface slippery. Transport can be a point of contention, with many preferring the Vaporetto over slower alternatives.
"We arrived at the bus terminal, and the first thing we saw of Venice’s old town was from this bridge – and it was just: wow.
The view from here gives you a fantastic first impression of the city. You get a great overview of the canals, the buildings, and the atmosphere that makes Venice so unique. It really sets the tone for what’s to come.
In our opinion, it’s one of the top bridges in the city – and surprisingly, it’s not overcrowded, so it’s also a great spot to take your first photos without being pushed around by the crowd.
Highly recommended as your first stop when entering Venice!"

"Venice is an absolutely gorgeous city. The architecture, colours, vibrancy, the restaurants and bars. It is a tourist mecca and I can see why the city fathers have a tourist tax, but what a feast for the eyes. St. Marks Square and Basilica is aweinspiring. Only took a short tour around, but WHAT A PLACE. Photos don't do it justice."

"📍 Constitution Bridge – Venice, Italy 🇮🇹
The newest bridge 🌉 over the Grand Canal, designed by Santiago Calatrava. Its modern glass-and-steel design contrasts with Venice’s historic architecture 🏛️ and links Piazzale Roma 🚍 with Santa Lucia train station 🚆. In the evening, the sunset views from the bridge are truly awesome 🌅✨, with the canal glowing in golden light. It can be slippery in rain 🌧️ and tricky with luggage 🧳, but as a vantage point, it’s one of the best modern spots to enjoy Venice’s beauty. 🙌"

🚇 🗺️ Getting There
While Alilaguna water buses go from the airport to various points in Venice, many travelers report long waits and crowded boats. The Vaporetto system is generally more efficient for getting around the city once you're there.
You can take a Vaporetto from the airport to Santa Lucia train station, or opt for a bus to Piazzale Roma and then walk across the Constitution Bridge.
Venice is a very walkable city, but be prepared for many bridges with steps. Comfortable shoes are a must!
You can take a water taxi directly to your hotel or a nearby canal stop, but it is a very expensive option. Land taxis will take you to Piazzale Roma, the edge of the historic center.
The primary modes of transport are Vaporetto (water buses), water taxis, and walking. Gondola rides are for leisure and sightseeing.
🎫 🎫 Tickets & Entry
For attractions like St. Mark's Basilica or Doge's Palace, advance booking is highly recommended to avoid long queues.
The bridges are always accessible as they are public thoroughfares. However, specific viewpoints or shops on them may have their own hours.
The Grand Canal itself is a public waterway and does not have an entrance fee. Accessing it via Vaporetto or water taxi will incur costs.
Yes, ACTV offers day passes or multi-day passes for Vaporetto services, which can be cost-effective if you plan to use them frequently.
Single Vaporetto tickets are relatively expensive, so purchasing a day pass or multi-day pass is often more economical for tourists.
📸 📸 Photography
The Constitution Bridge offers modern architectural shots, while the Rialto Bridge provides classic Venetian scenes. Many smaller bridges and canal-side walkways also offer unique perspectives.
Early mornings and late evenings, especially during sunset, offer beautiful light and fewer crowds for photography.
Generally, there are no specific photography restrictions on the public bridges, but be mindful of other pedestrians.
A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is useful for capturing both wide canal views and street details. A wide-angle lens can be great for capturing the scale of the bridges.
Drone usage is heavily restricted in Venice due to its historic nature and dense population. It's best to avoid bringing drones.
🎫 ⚖️ Onsite Experience
The Constitution Bridge has ramps, but the glass surface can be challenging. It's generally considered accessible, but caution is advised.
The Grand Canal is the bustling main artery of Venice, filled with Vaporettos, water taxis, gondolas, and the sounds of the city. It's vibrant and lively.
Public restrooms are available in various locations, particularly near major Vaporetto stops and tourist areas, but they often require a small fee.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential due to the cobblestones and numerous bridges. Dress in layers as the weather can change.
The main bridges are generally well-lit and safe, but it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in less crowded areas.

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
When crossing bridges like the Constitution Bridge, keep a close eye on children, as the glass can be slippery. Opt for Vaporetto stops that are closer to your accommodation to minimize walking with little ones. Many smaller canals and bridges offer quieter exploration opportunities away from the main crowds.
💰 Budget Travelers
Enjoy the Grand Canal views from public bridges like the Constitution Bridge and Rialto Bridge for free. Pack snacks and water to avoid overpriced tourist traps. Look for 'bacari' (traditional Venetian bars) for affordable cicchetti (small snacks) and local wine.

The Grand Canal: Venice's Lifeline
Experiencing the Grand Canal is often a highlight for visitors. The constant movement of boats, the reflections of historic facades on the water, and the unique urban landscape create a magical atmosphere. It's not just a tourist attraction; it's the living, breathing heart of Venice. Many travelers find that simply observing the daily life unfold along the canal is an experience in itself.
While gondola rides are iconic, the Vaporetto (water bus) is the most practical way to navigate the Grand Canal for most visitors. Line 1 runs the length of the canal, making frequent stops, allowing you to hop on and off to explore different sestieri (districts).
Venice's Iconic Bridges
The Constitution Bridge (Ponte della Costituzione), designed by Santiago Calatrava, stands in stark contrast with its modern glass and steel structure. It connects Piazzale Roma (the bus terminal) with the Santa Lucia train station, offering a contemporary gateway to the city. While some appreciate its sleek design and panoramic views, others feel it clashes with Venice's historic aesthetic. Travelers often note the slippery glass surface and occasional graffiti as drawbacks, but its vantage point, especially at sunset, is undeniable.
Beyond these four, countless smaller bridges crisscross the city's canals, each with its own charm and story. Exploring these lesser-known bridges can lead to delightful discoveries and quieter moments away from the main tourist paths.
