Venice was split into two factions: the Castellani of the east (shipwrights, craftsmen, the Arsenal), and the Nicolotti of the west (fisherfolk, salt workers from San Nicolò). San Trovaso was neutral ground, a buffer between the two. Their rivalry played out in ritualised battles on bridges like this one - fists and sticks, fought for honour and pride, until the violence grew deadly and the contests were banned. Today the scene is calm: a gondola slips beneath, neighbours cross at ease. A reminder of how layered even the stillest corners of Venice can be."
