Navigating the Waterways

Venice's historic center is a car-free zone; canals are the streets! Get ready to walk or embrace public water transport like the Vaporetto or private water taxis. Gondolas offer a romantic, albeit pricier, experience. Consider purchasing a multi-day Vaporetto pass if you plan on using it frequently.

Beat the Crowds & Costs

Venice can be incredibly crowded, especially during peak season. Some reviews mention an entrance ticket fee, so check official sources for current requirements. Visiting during shoulder seasons or opting for early mornings/late evenings can offer a more serene experience and potentially better prices.

The extraordinary costumes from Venice Carnival 2025 ✨ I said we will go back so I can dress up and participate more directly this year and will get it out of my system. Joke’s on me, we are hooked! We are leaving Venice with ideas for more costumes, more dress up, more knowledge and more friends. Venice, Italy There are no roads in the historic center of Venice—the canals are the streets. Instead of cars or buses, people get around by foot or by boat, using water taxis, water buses, and gondolas. Venice is built entirely on water. #venice #venicecanal #venezi #italy #italia #canals #canal #gondola #watertaxi #waterbus #bridges

Reviews Summary

Venice's historic center is lauded for its unique beauty, romantic canals, and rich history, offering a truly inimitable experience. However, some visitors find it overcrowded and lament the loss of its original essence, citing issues with tourist management, high costs, and a perceived decline in authentic local culture.

"A multitude of sites to visit, all very close together. Beautiful walks through the narrow streets of Venice's historic center can be enjoyed on foot or by gondola.
The vaporetto is convenient but expensive."

Sebastien Boulay

"Venice, a city that has lost its essence. My experience was disappointing and frustrating due to a number of issues that made our stay less than pleasant.
First of all, I find it unfair and immoral (even unconstitutional) the entrance ticket of €5 which becomes €10 if not purchased sufficiently in advance. This cost is not justified by the quality of the services offered (a city map continues to cost 3 euros as in the past). During the seven-hour stay, we saw no concrete benefit from this payment. The city seems to have forgotten its visitors, depriving them of essential services such as adequate waste bins and support staff.
Ticket control is concentrated exclusively at the entrance to the city, leaving tourists without assistance once inside. The presence of law enforcement was minimal, with only four police officers and two carabinieri sighted at the end of the day. On the contrary, we noticed numerous pickpockets operating without any control.
The absence of an entry quota has led to overcrowding which makes it difficult even to walk in the narrow streets of the historic center. This situation further worsens the visitor experience.
Finally, the massive presence of commercial activities managed by foreigners has a negative impact. This phenomenon raises questions about the cultural identity of Venice and the role of the authorities in preserving Made in Italy. The car park allows the payment of the daily rate only at a cost of 35 euros.
In conclusion, I consider Venice a destination to avoid. The city seems to have lost sight of the needs of its visitors, offering an unsatisfactory and frustrating tourist experience. I hope that the competent authorities can change the current situation and restore Venice to its charm and hospitality."
