"The islet is owned by the Borromeo family and is just a short distance from the Pallanza shore: visiting it is therefore impossible.
It is a place rich in history like few others in Verbano, given that it was once the site of a castle, perhaps built as early as the Carolingian era.
Around 1050, it became the residence of the Da Castello lords, who could control a significant portion of the lake from here, thanks in part to a complex system of watchtowers. In 1223, however, the castle was destroyed by the Municipality of Novara, in conflict with the Da Castello family, perhaps due to the latter's alliance with rival Vercelli.
As recently as 1595, Bishop Bascapè saw its ruins and the now-abandoned military chapel of Sant'Angelo.
The current palace dates back to the 17th century and has been modified several times since."
