What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Torre Matilde for its elegant restoration, particularly the spiral staircase, and the stunning 360-degree views from the rooftop terrace. The multimedia museum offers an engaging way to learn about Viareggio's history. While the interior is largely empty rooms with projections, the panoramic vistas make the visit worthwhile.
"I visited the tower many years ago, and I must say the interior restoration is very elegant, with an excellent choice of materials. A missing section of the brick vaults had been redone in concrete; now, in its place, there's a beautiful spiral staircase.
The rest of the interior features empty rooms and videos projected on the walls that tell the story of Viareggio and its tower.
Finally, a trapdoor leads to the roof terrace, where you can admire a remarkable 360-degree view of Viareggio. This is what makes the visit worthwhile!"

"Fantastic views from the top of the tower. Inside, there's historical information about the tower and Viareggio. A steel spiral staircase leads up to the top floor. At the top, a push of a button opens the steel door to the terrace. It looks like the entrance to an underground bunker—really fun! You then get a 360-degree view of the city of Viareggio. Admission is free. However, I recommend writing down the opening hours on a stable, fixed surface; a piece of paper pinned to it by stones isn't exactly ideal."

"The Torre di Viareggio, commonly known as "Torre Matilde," is an architectural gem embodying centuries of history and charm. Originally commissioned by the Lucca government in 1534, it was built to defend the warehouses and the nascent village located near the mouth of the Burlamacca Canal. Its construction, overseen by illustrious architects of the time, was completed in 1542, giving rise to the structure we admire today.
Over the centuries, the Torre Matilde has undergone various modifications, but has always retained its distinctive character. In the 19th century, it was used as a prison and convict bathhouse, bearing witness to a significant part of the region's penitentiary history. After years of neglect, it underwent a careful restoration that returned the structure to its original configuration.
Today, the Torre Matilde represents an important historical and cultural landmark for Viareggio and its residents. Although it is currently not open to visitors, it remains an impressive testimony to the city's past and an opportunity to immerse yourself in its rich history.
It would certainly be fascinating to explore and admire it up close, but even simply contemplating its majestic presence offers a unique and evocative experience. The Matilde Tower is undoubtedly a colossal historical relic that deserves to be preserved and enhanced, and remains an unmissable piece of Viareggio's cultural heritage."
