What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Zingaro Nature Reserve for its breathtaking coastal scenery, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters, calling it a highlight of Sicily. The hiking trails offer stunning views, and the natural beauty is a major draw. However, some find the summer heat challenging due to limited shade, and advise visitors to come well-prepared with water and snacks.
"Absolutely stunning. We took the coastal path which offers magnificent views of the coast and gives you access to some really beautiful beaches. The path is only 7km long but if you stop on the beaches and take pictures along the way it can easily take up to 3h (one way). We did the hike in mid May and despite temperature only being around 20°C it was hot, so I can not imagine doing the hike in the summer (there is very little shade)😅 Bring enough water and snacks🙈
You can start the hike at the southern entrance (near Scopello) or northern entrance (near San Vito lo capo)."

The free parking gets filled quickly on a holiday, so come early!"

"It is a wonderful place. We walked through the entire reserve, stopping at beaches along the way. I recommend it if you get to this area. It is a unique experience!"

Navigating the Trails of Zingaro
Key considerations for hiking include wearing appropriate footwear, as sandals are not ideal for the rocky paths. The reserve is largely exposed, meaning shade is scarce, making hydration and sun protection paramount, especially during the summer months. The reserve also contains smaller, less-marked paths that can lead to more secluded spots, but these require more caution and a good sense of direction.
For those concerned about the difficulty, Reddit users suggest that while it requires effort, it's manageable for those with moderate fitness levels, especially if they take their time and rest frequently. The reward for the effort is access to some of Sicily's most pristine and beautiful beaches, making the hike a truly unforgettable part of any trip to the region.
Discovering Zingaro's Pristine Beaches
These beaches are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and simply relaxing by the sea. The lack of commercial development means you'll experience nature in its purest form. Visitors often describe the water as glass-like and incredibly inviting, making it hard to resist a dip.
Remember that these are natural beaches with no facilities. Visitors are advised to bring their own towels, snacks, and plenty of water. The experience of finding your own secluded spot on one of these calas after a hike is often cited as a highlight of visiting Zingaro.
The Natural Beauty and Wildlife of Zingaro
The reserve's commitment to remaining undeveloped means it offers a glimpse into a more wild and untouched Sicily. The sounds of nature, from the gentle lapping of waves to the calls of birds, create a peaceful ambiance. This natural setting is what draws many visitors seeking an escape from urban life and a deeper connection with the environment.
While the focus is often on the beaches and trails, taking a moment to appreciate the diverse flora and the chance encounters with wildlife enhances the overall experience. The reserve serves as a vital sanctuary for its inhabitants and a beautiful natural playground for visitors.
