What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dead End Beach offers a unique, free public beach experience in Montego Bay, famous for its thrilling plane landings right next to the airport runway. Visitors love the authentic local vibe and clear waters, though some find the beach small and the noise from planes intense. It's a popular spot for plane enthusiasts and those seeking a less commercialized beach day.
"I walked from the guesthouse to Dead End Beach near the airport. On the way, you pass through a city park and a large sandy beach near a neighboring park, as well as a very small beach. After going through the main shopping street, you finally see the words "Dead End Beach." However, the beach itself is much smaller than I expected — just a tiny strip of sand. There were locals here cleaning fish and selling drinks. So, after seeing it, I decided to head back the same way, passing by the two larger beaches again.
That said, the seawater here is as clear and beautiful as everywhere else in Jamaica — which is to say, incredibly clear and stunning. So if you want to take a picture of the "Dead End Beach" sign, it’s worth a visit. But if you’re hoping to see something extraordinary or have high expectations, it’s probably not necessary to go out of your way."

"One of the very public beaches left. And tho very small it’s still amazing and packs a punch. You can fish and rent jet skis. Vendors are onsite and so are restaurants"

"a very small and dirty beach
Locals come there, and not everyone has the best mental health. One woman started yelling at me when I was taking a photo of the beach 😬"

The Thrill of Plane Spotting
While the plane spotting is the main draw, it's important to be prepared for the sensory experience. The noise from the engines can be quite loud when planes are overhead, and some visitors find it intense. However, for many, this is part of the exhilarating appeal. The beach itself is a public space, and the constant activity of the airport adds a dynamic backdrop to a day spent relaxing by the sea.
To make the most of your plane spotting adventure, consider visiting during peak flight times or when the sun is positioned favorably for photography. Remember to bring your camera and be ready to capture some unforgettable moments as these giants of the sky touch down just meters away.
Understanding the Local Vibe
However, it's also important to be aware that this local popularity can mean the beach gets crowded, particularly on Sundays. Some visitors have noted that the beach is smaller than they expected, with limited sandy areas. Additionally, as with many popular local spots, you might encounter vendors actively promoting their goods and services. While many are friendly, it's wise to be prepared for persistent sales pitches.
To best enjoy the local vibe, approach your visit with an open mind and a friendly demeanor. Engage respectfully with locals, perhaps try some of the refreshments offered by vendors, and soak in the authentic Jamaican beach culture. It's a place where you can truly connect with the community and experience the island beyond the typical tourist trail.
Practicalities: What to Expect
While the beach offers a beautiful natural setting, amenities are basic. You'll find vendors selling drinks and snacks, and there are restaurants nearby. However, don't expect extensive facilities like public restrooms or changing rooms. The proximity to the airport means you'll experience significant noise from landing aircraft, which is a defining characteristic of the location.
For those planning a visit, it's advisable to bring your own essentials like sunscreen, hats, and towels. If you're looking for a quiet, secluded beach experience, Dead End might not be the best fit due to its popularity with locals and the airport noise. However, for a unique combination of plane spotting, local culture, and a dip in the Caribbean Sea, it's a worthwhile destination.
