Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Naruko Dam for its impressive arch structure and the stunning autumn foliage that surrounds it. The opportunity to collect unique dam cards and learn about its construction history adds to the appeal. However, during dry seasons, low water levels can detract from the visual experience.

"Beautiful Autumn view. Hardly any tourists - mostly local. Just as good as Naruko Gorge. Got to come if you are in Tohoku region during Fall."

"Visited on August 16, 2025.
Due to the lack of rain over the past few days, the dam's water storage rate has been at 0%, which has led to it being frequently featured on television.
It's a large arch dam, and you can walk on the top, so it's visually very enjoyable. Looking down, the steep slope unique to an arch dam makes your legs tremble.
Looking down at the dam lake, the bare mountainside is exposed, making the water shortage keenly apparent.
The parking lot is large, and there are many posters introducing the dam, so it seems to have a strong tourist aspect.
Dam cards are available at the Naruko Dam Management Office, about a three-minute drive away. They are also available on weekends and holidays.
Various documents from the dam's construction are on display here. It appears to be the first dam in Japan to be constructed without the assistance of foreign engineers, and the blueprints and design drawings reveal the hard work that went into its construction.
This was a very enjoyable dam, both in terms of its size and the museum."

"The last time I came, I was able to see the bamboo blind release, so this time I came to see the dam release.
Unlike the bamboo blind release, this one is more powerful and impressive.
Even though the Hanabuchiyama Bypass has been built, I still prefer to drive on Route 108 on the dam side.
Since September, I've encountered monkeys, bears and badgers while driving, but today it was a squirrel.
Just be careful of wild animals jumping out into the open."
