Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Marumasu-Nishimuraya for its authentic Kyo-Yuzen dyeing workshops and other craft experiences. The staff are highlighted for their exceptional kindness, patience, and helpfulness, making the workshops enjoyable for all ages. The ability to create a unique, handmade souvenir is a major draw, offering a memorable and rewarding cultural immersion in Kyoto.

"My wife and I showed up pretty much near closing time and even though I could tell that we were a bit of an inconvenience to the staff, they were all super nice to us. We were really just there to ask if we needed to make a reservation to take the workshop but even without a reservation, they invited us in and showed us the basic steps. They mostly guide you through stencil work and even though I wanted to freehand my work, the stencils worked well and the brushes that they provide really work best for stencils. They have a really great selection of surfaces that you can work on so my wife chose a scroll and I worked on a hardback photo holder. You just have to pay for whatever you choose to paint on and everything else is included. Honestly this was way better of an experience than I imagined. I left feeling relaxed and accomplished and I am curious to push myself further into fabric painting. Thank you Marumasu!!"

"The workshop I did was where I learned how to tie furoshiki in 6 different ways and then make my own.
They were super nice, helpful, and encouraging! I wish I had discovered this place earlier on, I would've definitely gone back and made something else.
Thank you for sharing your art with us!"

Nicole Henderson

"Went there for a chopsticks making class, but I think they have a bunch of different ones. We really enjoyed the whole class. The instructor is guiding you thru the process but honestly it’s pretty simple.
It’s an awesome thing to do, esp on a rainy day. 100% recommend this workshop if you’re looking for alternative things to do in kyoto!"
