What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Terakoya Ski Area is praised for its peaceful, old-school charm and lack of crowds, offering a serene ski experience. Visitors appreciate the excellent snow quality due to its high altitude and the friendly staff. However, some find the uncovered chairlifts cold and windy, and the resort might be too basic for those seeking extensive amenities or challenging terrain.
"This is an older-style, humble and simple location, without the hustle & bustle and pretentious nature of many more modern resorts. We came for Christmas and had the ski slopes to ourselves, almost the only foreigners here. No queue for the lifts at all, so we went up and down more than you would normally. By 3pm we were exhausted! :) The slopes were empty and well groomed. Because the season had only just opened, there were only a few chairlifts running, but for immediate level and beginner skiers, this is fine. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. The restaurants serve all the Japanese classics, like ramen as well as pizza and a wide selection of cakes."

The Charm of Terakoya's Old-School Vibe
During peak times like Christmas, the slopes can be virtually empty, allowing skiers to enjoy more runs without waiting. This tranquility is a major selling point, especially for families or those who prefer a less commercialized mountain experience. The friendly and welcoming staff further enhance this positive atmosphere, contributing to the resort's overall appeal.
The resort's high altitude ensures good snow quality, making it a reliable destination for winter sports. While some chairlifts might have limited operation early in the season, the available runs are well-groomed and perfect for immediate-level and beginner skiers.
Navigating Shiga Kogen's High-Altitude Beauty
This high altitude means that even when lower resorts might be struggling with snow, Terakoya often maintains good coverage. However, it also means visitors should be prepared for colder temperatures and potentially strong winds, especially on exposed chairlifts that lack covers. The views from these higher points are often spectacular, offering sweeping panoramas of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it a prime spot for photography.
When visiting Shiga Kogen, especially in winter, it's crucial to be aware of the weather. While sunny days offer breathtaking vistas, snowy days can be very windy and cold. Planning your day to take advantage of clear weather for scenic views and being prepared for harsher conditions are key to enjoying the high-altitude experience.
