Reviews Summary

Mount Futatsumori is praised for being an exceptionally accessible entry point to the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site, thanks to its forest road. Visitors appreciate the manageable hike and the opportunity to experience the ancient forest. However, many note that the summit views are disappointing due to overgrowth, and trail conditions can be very slippery after rain.

"[Futatsumori]

One of the main peaks in the Shirakami-Sanchi Mountains, also known as Tomari-dake.

World Heritage Site

Known as the easiest place to enter the deepest reaches of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site.

Previously considered to be 1,086m above sea level, the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused it to rise to 1,087m.

A third-class triangulation point, "Tomari-dake" (1,086.47m above sea level), is located at the summit.

The name "Futatsumori" originally came from the Akita Prefecture side, where two peaks appear to be visible.

On the Aomori Prefecture side, it has been exclusively called "Tomari-dake." The Shirakami-Sanchi's interior was originally a pathless mountain range accessible only to matagi hunters. It was impossible to travel from Meya in Aomori Prefecture in one day, requiring overnight stays on the mountain, hence the name.
The Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site has restrictions on mountain access, particularly in the "core area," and no footpaths or hiking trails have been developed for environmental conservation reasons.
However, at Futatsumori, a forest road (formerly the Aoaki Forest Road) runs nearly to the summit, fully paved by Akita Prefecture in 1995, making it easy to reach the peak by private vehicle.
The trailhead is about a 45-minute drive from National Route 101 in Happo Town, and from there, the World Heritage site is a 5-minute walk away.

This is one of the few places in the Shirakami-Sanchi that can be reached independently, by far the most difficult of Japan's World Heritage sites.
The forest road is frequently closed, so it's a good idea to check beforehand whether it's open.

"2021,07
The mountain path is clear, and no-entry tape is posted everywhere in dangerous areas. If you turn right at the first fork, there are no other forks, so there is almost no need to worry about getting lost.
However, if the mountain path is wet after rain, it can be very muddy, and the wooden pieces buried like stepping stones on the mountain path and the stepped uphill slope reinforced with logs can be very slippery, so care must be taken.
Even if you are not a regular hiker, if you are in good health, you can reach the summit from the trailhead in about two hours (generally about one hour) and experience the nature of Shirakami-Sanchi."

"I climbed it in May. There was still snow in various places. Chains were deployed in areas with snow, so it was possible to go up and down, but I recommend wearing non-slip shoes.
The view isn't great, so I wouldn't recommend climbing if you're hoping for a spectacular view."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site

Mount Futatsumori serves as a gateway to the Shirakami-Sanchi, a vast, mountainous region in northern Honshu, Japan, recognized for its exceptionally well-preserved beech forest ecosystem. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it's one of Japan's most significant natural treasures. The core area of the Shirakami-Sanchi is strictly protected, with no developed hiking trails or footpaths to minimize human impact and preserve its pristine state. This makes accessing its deepest reaches incredibly challenging for most visitors. Reddit

However, Mount Futatsumori, also known as Tomari-dake on the Aomori side, offers a unique opportunity. Unlike the inaccessible core, a paved forest road extends nearly to its summit. This allows visitors to experience the unique atmosphere and biodiversity of the Shirakami-Sanchi without needing specialized mountaineering skills or permits. The mountain's name, 'Futatsumori,' originates from the Akita side, describing the appearance of two peaks, while 'Tomari-dake' on the Aomori side hints at the historical difficulty of traversing the area, requiring overnight stays. Reddit

The elevation of Mount Futatsumori was recorded at 1,086 meters but shifted to 1,087 meters following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, a testament to the dynamic geological forces at play in the region. While the summit itself is marked by a third-class triangulation point, the primary appeal lies in the immersive forest environment and the ease of access to a protected natural wonder. Reddit

Navigating the Trail and Conditions

The hike from the Mount Futatsumori trailhead to the summit is generally straightforward, with the path clearly marked. However, the trail conditions can change dramatically depending on the weather. After rainfall, the path becomes notoriously muddy and slippery, posing a significant challenge even for experienced hikers. Wooden planks and log reinforcements are often used to stabilize steeper sections, but these can also become treacherous when wet. Reddit

Visitors climbing in May should be prepared for lingering snow in various areas. While chains are sometimes deployed to aid passage, wearing appropriate footwear is essential. Non-slip hiking boots are highly recommended to maintain traction and prevent accidents. The journey to the summit typically takes about an hour one-way, making it a feasible half-day excursion for those in reasonable physical condition. Reddit

It's important to manage expectations regarding the summit experience. The observation deck at the peak is currently overgrown with vegetation, meaning spectacular panoramic views are unlikely. The true reward of climbing Mount Futatsumori is the opportunity to walk through the ancient forest and experience the tranquility of the Shirakami-Sanchi, rather than a scenic overlook. Reddit
