"The crater of Mount Aso has been a sacred object of worship at Aso Shrine for over 2000 years. Six shrine buildings and gates (Ichinoshinden, Ninoshinden, Sannoshinden, Romon, Shinkomon, and Kangyomon), that had been rebuilt between 1840 - 1850 were designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 2007. However, they suffered severe damage in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. The long and arduous task of restoring these damaged structures was finally completed in December 2023."
