Reviews Summary

Minami-Atami offers spacious accommodations with the highlight being the abundant, salty hot spring water, perfect for a relaxing getaway. Guests appreciate the bay views and well-equipped kitchens for self-catering. However, some find the cost-performance lacking, citing issues with cleanliness, maintenance, and challenging access roads.

"Overall it's a nice get away for the weekend. It is a moderately sized appartment that has many furnishings, utensils and cooking ware. There was a burnable garbage bag waiting for us to use. There is a balcony in room 6B with a nice view of the bay. There are extra futons and couches for guests to sleep on. The bath has a tap for onsen water. It was very salty to taste. There is no food; bring your own to cook. Improvements would be to clean the appartment before arrival. There were many small flying ant looking insects in the bathroom. Since it is up a cliff, it is best to go up there by car or taxi."

Jessica Ing

"The temperature of the hot spring water coming out of the tap is over 70 degrees, so naturally, I filled it with water, but the water was of such high quality that I was able to fully enjoy the hot spring. Even with water, it was very salty, almost like bittern. After brushing my teeth, I rinsed my mouth with the hot water, and it was even saltier than if I had used salt toothpaste. After the bath, I rinsed with regular water from the shower, and my skin felt so smooth. It also warmed my body so much. The room had a dining room of about 12 tatami mats, a counter kitchen of about 6 tatami mats, a living room of about 8 tatami mats, a bedroom of about 8 tatami mats (with two double beds), and a spacious balcony. The kitchen was well-equipped with dishes, a rice cooker, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle, a bottle opener, a can opener, and a wine opener. I bought a sashimi platter from a local fishmonger, so I was able to cook rice and eat it. The young man and the landlady were very welcoming. Since it's a resort condominium, it's structured differently from a hotel, so as long as you understand this, I think it's a very enjoyable accommodation."

番長

"The cost performance is poor.
The service provided for the price is not enough, such as having to take out the trash by yourself.
The floor squeaks.
The amperage of the power is 40A, which is small compared to the number of rooms. The breaker trips when you start using the microwave or IH stove. All kitchen utensils are available.
There are many rooms, so if you want to stay with a large number of people, it is possible, but there is a sign asking you to be quiet after 11 o'clock. I thought there wasn't much soundproofing.
Hot springs can be lukewarm or hot, or the temperature can be incomprehensible. The water pressure in the shower was very low, so people with long hair might have a hard time. Shampoos are cheap and can be very damaging to your hair.
The road to get there is steep and narrow, so if it's a rainy day, you might not be able to climb it with worn tires. Since you have to drive down to the national highway to get to the nearby convenience store, we recommend doing all your shopping in Atami.

Only one thing is that you can see Hatsushima from the balcony and the view is good, so I chose 2 rooms."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Unique Atami Onsen Experience

Minami-Atami is renowned for its natural hot springs, a key draw for visitors seeking relaxation and therapeutic benefits. The water is notably salty, a characteristic that many find invigorating for the skin. Some accommodations boast private onsen baths, allowing for an intimate and convenient experience. However, be prepared for the water's high temperature, often exceeding 70°C, necessitating mixing with cold water for a comfortable soak. Reviews suggest the water quality is excellent, leaving skin feeling smooth and bodies deeply warmed. TikTokReddit

While the onsen is a major plus, some travelers have noted inconsistencies in water temperature and low water pressure in showers. The shampoos provided are sometimes described as basic. Despite these minor drawbacks, the abundance of hot spring water and the unique salty composition make it a memorable part of any stay in the area. Reddit

For those looking to experience onsen culture, Minami-Atami offers a distinct and accessible option, especially if you're staying in a property that features these private facilities. It's a chance to immerse yourself in a traditional Japanese wellness practice with a unique local twist. TikTok

Navigating Minami-Atami's Terrain and Access

Getting to and around Minami-Atami presents a unique challenge due to its steep and narrow roads. While a car is often recommended for convenience, drivers should be prepared for a demanding ascent, especially in adverse weather conditions. The terrain means that walking to nearby amenities might not always be feasible, reinforcing the need for personal transport. Reddit

For those without a car, taxis are a viable, albeit potentially more expensive, option. Public transportation can be less direct, often requiring transfers and a final leg by taxi. It's crucial to plan your travel meticulously, especially if relying on public transport, to avoid getting stranded or facing significant delays. Instagram

Once you arrive, the steepness of the area can also impact accessibility. While some accommodations offer spacious interiors, the journey to get there requires careful consideration. If you have mobility concerns, it's advisable to confirm the specific access routes and any potential challenges with your accommodation provider beforehand. Reddit

Self-Catering and Local Flavors

A significant aspect of staying in Minami-Atami is the self-catering nature of many accommodations. Unlike traditional hotels, these often function as apartments, meaning you'll need to bring your own food and drinks. Kitchens are typically well-equipped with essential appliances like rice cookers, microwaves, and toasters, alongside a good selection of dishes and utensils. Reddit

This setup encourages visitors to explore local markets and shops in Atami city before heading to their lodging. Purchasing fresh ingredients, such as sashimi from a local fishmonger, can elevate your self-catered dining experience. It's a chance to engage with local produce and prepare meals at your own pace. Reddit

Be aware that amenities like trash disposal might also be the guest's responsibility, so factor this into your planning. While it requires more preparation, the self-catering approach offers flexibility and can be a cost-effective way to enjoy your stay, especially for longer visits or larger groups. Reddit
