What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Hikers praise the beautiful, stream-side trail and the rewarding challenge of the technical terrain. However, many caution that the hike is more difficult than expected, with a strenuous descent and a significant walk from the taxi drop-off to the trailhead. Logistical planning for taxis is essential, especially for foreign visitors.
"Great trail. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a foreigner or what but the trail is not easy as others mentioned! My legs were numb at the end and then you have another 30min walk to the taxi spot.
But it's a great trail just be prepared for lots of rocks, elevation changes and taking breaks
As of August 2025 there is a wifi hotspot at the old trailhead which you can connect to call a taxi, etc. The bathrooms do not work"

"We were here at the end of October 2025. There was Wifi available. The road was still closed due to a landslide but you can walk about 2km to a taxi pick-up place (no service there). We arranged a taxi with the help from Jonengoya hut (they called for us) and it came right on time, even a little early. The taxi driver contacted Jonengoya hut to let him know he picked us up.
As a foreigner, this was a super reliable service and felt safe. It worked great.
Last but not least: the trail was fairly technical, lots of rocks, roots and ladders, but it was beautiful. We enjoyed this hike a lot."

"Tested and confirmed wifi is availble and working. Makes it easier for foreigners like us able to call for a taxi at the pick up point which is like 35min walk away. 25min if you can walk at a faster pace. I made a hotel booking due to extreme bad weather at Jonen and have to retreat. Another way is ask the staff at Jonen Lodge to make a taxi booking for you. Indicate the time for the taxi to pick you up. Allocate enough time based on your descend pace. Is about 5hrs to descend from Jonen Hut to taxi pick up point. We allocate 6 hrs so we can hike down slowly. Taxi came earlier and driver prepare the watetproof sheet at the back seat for us since it was raining still and we came down from bad weather. I was worried that we will stain or wet the taxi back seat. Hope this post helps alot of foreign hikers who doesnt speak japanese able to get back to Hotaka Station when climbing at Ichinosawa Trailhead. i tried using uber to check and able to see taxi to book. But best to book with staff at Jonen Hut just in case wifi not working."
