What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mulan Akihabara is a popular spot for finding discounted second-hand anime merchandise and retro games, with many visitors appreciating the good deals and the chance to inspect used items. However, some shoppers have encountered issues with rude staff, particularly on upper floors, and a significant language barrier, which can detract from the overall experience.
"Mulan Akiba is a decent second-hand store that sells discounted anime merchandise, claw game discontinued items and other cheap goods. There's even a few discount bins at the far right of the store, and multiple floors that are adults only upstairs. The only downside is I only found mainstream anime and games here, so old classics like Death Note, Inuyasha or new ones like My Happy marriage, Your name weren't found. The aisles are also very tight, so no more than 1 person could fit in, 2 people is too many. There's also a language barrier with staff, as they spoke limited to no English. It's a decent place for what it sells, but there are more affordable anime merch in other stores within the Akihabara area such as Surugaya and Liberty Akihabara. If you find this store go for it, but it's otherwise it's a pass."

"Good price for second-hand anime figures. I was able to buy C.C from code geass. Staff opened the box for me to double check the figure since it was used. It was in great condition and I bought it. Nice store with good deals, I recommend it!"

"Had a horrible time. While I was checking out l, the woman cashier just snatched the stuff I was trying to give her. She seems to really hate foreigners. I was trying to put the pen back and she grabbed it OUT of my hand."

Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Navigating the store with children might require extra attention due to the tight aisles, which can make it challenging to move around with strollers or multiple children. While the staff on the first floor are generally reported as professional, the potential for language barriers or less-than-ideal interactions on other floors means parents should stay close to their kids and be prepared to assist with communication if needed. Overall, it's a place for a focused visit rather than extended family browsing.
💰 Budget Travelers
While Mulan offers great deals, it's wise to compare prices with other second-hand shops in Akihabara, such as Surugaya and Liberty, as they might occasionally have even better offers on specific items. Be prepared for the possibility of a language barrier with some staff, which might affect the negotiation or inquiry process, but the potential savings make it a worthwhile stop for bargain hunters.

Navigating the Akihabara Anime Scene
While Mulan excels in offering affordable anime goods, it's important to note that its selection leans towards mainstream anime and games. For more niche or extensive collections, visitors are often advised to explore neighboring stores like Surugaya and Liberty Akihabara, which are also renowned for their second-hand offerings. This strategic exploration allows shoppers to maximize their finds within the Akihabara district.
The experience at Mulan can be a mixed bag regarding customer service. While some patrons have praised the staff for their helpfulness, particularly in allowing inspections of used items, others have reported instances of rudeness and a significant language barrier, especially on the upper floors. This inconsistency in service is a recurring theme in visitor feedback, highlighting the importance of managing expectations.
Finding Bargains: Mulan's Discount Strategy
Beyond the general second-hand market, Mulan also features discontinued claw game items. These are often unique prizes that are no longer available through their original arcade channels, making them desirable collectibles. By acquiring and reselling these items at a discount, Mulan provides an avenue for fans to obtain these sought-after pieces without the high cost associated with rare arcade finds.
It's worth noting that while Mulan offers great value, the "tax-free" shopping experience for tourists has been a point of contention for some. Reports suggest that not all staff members are adept at or willing to facilitate this process smoothly, leading to potential confusion or dissatisfaction. Visitors seeking tax-free purchases should be prepared to navigate this aspect carefully.
