What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Happodai Observatory for its breathtakingly clear night skies, offering views of the Milky Way and celestial bodies through telescopes. The free admission and the unique, otherworldly daytime scenery, especially the sunrise over clouds, are major highlights. However, potential visitors should be prepared for significant temperature drops, poor cell service, and the need for careful driving on the mountain roads.
"I visited on May 1st. I was shown telephoto images of the sun and the astronomical telescope. Thank you very much for your kindness. Looking at the photos of "Invitation to the Starry Sky" and the photos of the observatory director Ciro, I was reminded of how I was crazy about stargazing as a high school student, and my family's pet dog at the time, Ciro, who has the same name as the observatory director, and tears welled up in my eyes. Fujii Akira has passed away, but I'm sure he was able to meet Ciro at the Rainbow Bridge. I think I'll start stargazing again 😊"

"You can visit for free. The staff gave us a detailed explanation. It was very easy to understand the mechanism and types of telescopes. If you visit at night to observe the stars, you need to take measures against the cold. The temperature difference between the observatory and the foot of the mountain is 12 to 13 degrees even in summer. There are no unnecessary lights around, and the night sky is amazing."

"It's a wonderful place I've visited several times.
It's open Wednesdays and Saturdays, and admission is free. On clear days, they show you the stars through the astronomical telescope inside the dome. Apparently, as many as 200 people use it at peak times, so the wait time is long and the number of stars visible through the telescope is limited.
The day I visited was quiet, so I was able to observe three stars, including Saturn.
Under the right conditions, the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye. The day before the full moon, the moonlight was very bright, so unfortunately, the Milky Way was not visible. However, the starry sky was magnificent.
The staff told me that with the current weather conditions, clear, sunny days are rare, making stargazing more difficult than it used to be.
There were many people camping in their cars in the parking lot to take photos of the starry sky. I also camped in my car, and the next day, I watched the sun rise from the sea of clouds before heading home.
This is truly a place that makes you feel like you're in paradise."

At night, you can witness an incredible starry sky, often with the Milky Way visible to the naked eye on clear nights. Telescope viewings offer closer looks at planets and stars.
Stargazing is dependent on weather conditions. Clear skies are essential, and cloudy nights can lead to cancellations, even if an event is scheduled.

📸 📸 Photography Tips
The area around the observatory offers minimal light pollution, making it ideal for astrophotography. Consider using the gravel parking lot behind the observatory for a slightly different vantage point, though it's further from amenities.
While smartphones can capture the general beauty of the night sky, dedicated astrophotography setups will yield more detailed results. However, the sheer brilliance of the stars is still moving.
There are no specific restrictions mentioned for general photography. However, be mindful of other visitors and avoid using bright lights that could disrupt stargazing.
Sunrise offers a unique opportunity for landscape photography, especially when a sea of clouds forms below. The desolate daytime scenery also provides a stark, alien-like backdrop.
For night photography, a tripod is essential for long exposures. A wide-angle lens with a fast aperture (low f-number) will help capture more light from the stars.
