Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Tsuchiyu Kokeshi Museum for its rich collection and the exceptional kindness of its staff, particularly the director, who offers insightful explanations. The museum provides a deep dive into the history and artistry of Tohoku kokeshi dolls, making it a rewarding experience for enthusiasts. While the exhibits are compact, they are comprehensive and frequently updated, ensuring a fresh visit each time.

"It's easy to see that kokeshi dolls differ depending on their place of origin and type. Admission is 300 yen, and there are approximately 1,300 dolls on display at any given time. Kokeshi dolls were originally children's toys unique to the Tohoku region. In the past, they were used as a memorial for children who died at a young age, and also as a way to pray for and celebrate the growth of children. Apparently, the expressions of the kokeshi dolls change subtly depending on the maker's physical condition on that day, and comparing each one made it clear the differences. Kokeshi dolls are sold in souvenir shops, but this changed the way I look at them. The museum director was also kind, and said he would explain the exhibits in the museum if I requested. I learned a lot."

"I only went in to use the restroom, but the reception staff were very kind and polite, which left a very good impression on me. I thought I'd show my appreciation by looking around the museum, but I'm not that interested in kokeshi dolls, so I ended up just saying thank you. The restrooms were kept very clean."
