Reviews Summary
Visitors find Kannabe Castle Ruins to be a well-maintained historical site offering beautiful panoramic views. While much of the original structure is gone, the remaining moats, wells, and enclosure foundations provide a glimpse into its past. The accessible trails and the scenic overlook are frequently praised, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in history and nature.
"Kannabe Castle is a mountain castle built near the top of Mount Oba overlooking the town of Kannabe. Currently, you can drive up close to the castle grounds.
Kannabe Castle is structured with a main enclosure at the top of the mountain, and a series of enclosures along the western and northern ridges. There seems to be a group of ridged moats near the tip of the western ridge, but they are currently obscured by bushes and cannot be seen.
Kannabe Castle is thought to have once been made entirely of stone walls, but when Fukuyama Castle was built, many of the buildings and stone walls were moved to Fukuyama Castle, and only a small amount of stone walls remain today.
Kannabe Castle has a well-maintained promenade, making it easy to visit. Remains such as moats and wells can be seen. The view is good, and you can see the town of Kannabe.
Kannabe Castle was built by the Yamana clan during the Muromachi period. During the Sengoku period, it became the castle of the Sugihara clan, and after the fall of the Sugihara clan, it came under the direct control of the Mori clan.
In the Edo period, Fukushima Masanori developed it into a modern castle, but when Fukuyama Castle was built by Mizuno, the lord of Fukuyama domain, Kannabe Castle was abandoned and most of the buildings and stone walls were repurposed for Fukuyama Castle."

"The local tourist association has been working hard to maintain the castle, and it's probably rare for a mountain castle like this to have such a well-maintained parking lot. However, the road from the base to the parking lot is quite narrow and covered in moss, so you might slip on a motorcycle.
Also, the stone wall area is quite dangerous, so it would be nice if they could thin out the trees and install handrails."

"I enjoyed Yukimura ch's Mori Motonari episode, which inspired me to visit Kannabe Castle Ruins, the main castle of the Bingo Yamana clan. While Mori Motonari was still subordinate to Ouchi Yoshitaka, Sue Harukata, a vassal of the Ouchi clan, attacked this castle but failed. Mori Motonari then used a strategy to capture the castle, along with the local lords of Aki Province. Kannabe Castle was under the direct control of the Ouchi clan, but when Sue Harukata rebelled in the "Taineiji Incident," Sugihara Morishige, a chief retainer of the Bingo Yamana clan, seized Kannabe Castle and raised his flag, claiming the Yamana clan's restoration with the support of the Amago clan of Izumo. Mori Motonari, with Kikkawa Motoharu as his vanguard, suppressed the revolt and, in the confusion, made it Mori clan territory. I recommend watching Yukimura ch for a humorous explanation of this history. I really like how in the video, Yoshikawa Motoharu and Sugihara Morishige recognize their enemies and develop a friendship, which reminds me of a Showa-era sports drama. Moreover, although the explanation is exaggerated, I was really surprised to learn that the historical flow is based on historical facts lol"
