The northernmost part of the Michinoku Coastal Trail, between Kabushima Shrine in Hachinohe and the Tanesashi Natural Lawn. . I’m reposting this from June, when I walked it for Lonely Planet. And I’m thinking about other coastal hikes in Japan - for stories and for fun. Doing a full Michinoku thru-hike is high on my list of things to do (next year ideally). The Jogasaki Coast in Shizuoka looks goo...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Kabushima Shrine for its picturesque setting and the unique spectacle of thousands of black-tailed gulls, especially during breeding season. The shrine's location on a small island and its connection to the Michinoku Coastal Trail are also highlights. However, the abundance of gulls means bird droppings are a common issue, though umbrellas are provided. Some find the shrine itself less remarkable than its natural surroundings.

"Really pretty area but holy cow, the birds! They were out in full force when I visited and their droppings were equally evident. They scared off easily enough but be sure to watch your step as you peruse the grounds. Still, I very much enjoyed my walk through the area and the nearby beach. It’s worth a visit if you’re in the area and looking back two years later, I still have fond memories of this place and day 🤗"

Ben Scarboro

"Peaceful shrine with breathtaking scenery

We didn’t get to see the famous gulls this time, but we were lucky enough to witness an absolutely dramatic sky over Kabushima Shrine. The sunlight breaking through the clouds over the sea made the whole place feel sacred and alive.

The red torii gate, the wide stairs, and the ocean view together create such a powerful atmosphere . it’s one of those moments that make you stop and breathe. Even without the birds, the scenery itself was unforgettable.

Highly recommend coming here if you’re in Hachinohe , it’s quiet, beautiful, and full of energy from the sea and sky."

Kim

"Even though the shrine was closed, it was still quite a sight! If you're planning a visit and are wary of the seagulls flying around, there are umbrellas at the base of the stairs you can use to avoid an aerial "bombing run." However, it's actually considered good luck to receive a "special surprise" from a black-tailed gull, so choose your adventure wisely!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Significance of Kabushima Shrine

Kabushima Shrine, dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of wealth, happiness, and wisdom, has a long history of being a place for local fishermen and townspeople to pray for good fortune in business and fishing. Instagram The shrine was reconstructed after a fire in 2015, preserving its cultural importance. Its picturesque location on a small island connected by a walkway makes it a visually striking landmark. Instagram

The shrine's unique connection to the black-tailed gulls is a defining characteristic. These birds choose Kabu Island as their breeding ground from March to August each year. This natural phenomenon transforms the island into a vibrant habitat, attracting visitors keen to witness this spectacle. Instagram The presence of the gulls has become intrinsically linked with the shrine's identity, making it a dual attraction for both spiritual seekers and nature enthusiasts. Instagram

For trekkers, Kabushima Shrine holds particular significance as it marks the start or end point of the challenging Michinoku Coastal Trail. Instagram This adds another layer to its appeal, drawing hikers who seek both spiritual reflection and the accomplishment of completing a significant portion of this renowned trail. The combination of cultural heritage, natural wonder, and outdoor adventure makes Kabushima Shrine a multifaceted destination. Instagram

Navigating the Gull Colony

Visiting Kabushima Shrine during the black-tailed gull breeding season (March to August) offers an unparalleled wildlife experience, but it comes with a unique challenge: bird droppings. Instagram+1 Many visitors, including those on social media, highlight the sheer number of gulls and the resulting mess. Reddit To help manage this, umbrellas are strategically placed at the base of the stairs leading up to the shrine, providing a practical solution for visitors. InstagramReddit

Despite the potential mess, many find the experience rewarding. Some cultures even consider receiving a 'special surprise' from a gull to be good luck. Reddit This perspective can shift the perception of the droppings from a nuisance to a quirky part of the cultural experience. Instagram The gulls are generally not aggressive and are accustomed to human presence, allowing for close observation and photography, especially of the chicks in June. Instagram+1

For those who prefer to admire the shrine and its surroundings from a distance, or if the gull activity is particularly intense, there are alternative viewing points. A cafe located near a bus stop offers excellent panoramic views of the shrine and the bay, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery and perhaps a latte without direct exposure to the gull colony. Reddit This provides a comfortable option for those who are wary of the birds but still wish to experience the beauty of the location. Reddit
