Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Hachioji Castle Ruins for its beautiful, peaceful forest trails and historical ambiance, offering a great escape from the city. The hike is considered moderately challenging but rewarding, with nice views from the summit. Some find the actual ruins to be minimal, but the overall experience of nature and history is highly valued.

"This hachioji castle remains site is about one hour train ride from Tokyo and there’s a bus available during weekends all the way to the museum where the hiking trails starts. There are buses during weekdays but only stop at cemetery entrance. From this point to the trails about 14 minutes walk.

Don’t forget to stop by the information center where guides are available but probably only limited English speaking guides.

Trails are absolutely beautiful. There are two trails and not connected. We only did a short one by the creek because was hoping to meet the sankouchou paradise flycatcher. But according to the guide this year probably not able to see. So far there’s no sightings yet."

"Spent a glorious and sunny Saturday exploring the peaceful forest and important cultural site via the Hachioji Castle Ruins Loop found on All Trails app. We used Google maps to locate site and found the free parking lot opened at 9:00 am. There is a restroom, maps and very sweet volunteer at the drink stand offering advice for hike or visit to ruins. Enjoyed the cool forest and birding, the various markers and monuments, and a picnic lunch we brought along. At the summit there is a view of Mt Fuji and a resting area. From the drink stand we took the trail on the right and walked counter clockwise ending up at the ruins by early afternoon. The trail was not too difficult but use caution as it could get slippery in rainy season. Highly recommend for an enjoyable day of exercise and cultural exploration."

"Great view of Hachioji from up top. The hike is slightly challenging but many elderly people we met had no problem getting up and down. Also the whole place has a calm ambience to it."
