Reviews Summary

Miyajima Island is widely praised for its breathtaking natural beauty and iconic Itsukushima Shrine. Visitors are captivated by the 'floating' torii gate, the serene atmosphere, and the unique experience of encountering wild deer. While generally a positive experience, some find the island can get crowded during peak times.

"There is a fence for the Miyajima Natural Botanical Research Institute a few kilometers ahead, so I contacted the institute and opened the fence myself and entered. When the road ends, the institute is on the left, so I called out to them and they explained to me where the remains of the artillery battery were. It's a long way from the fence, so walking would be difficult. The road is winding and narrow, and it's impossible to pass other vehicles. There are collapsed parts of the road, so it's easier to get there by motorcycle than by car."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Iconic Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its 'floating' torii gate, which appears to float on the water during high tide. This Shinto shrine has a history stretching back over 1400 years and is considered one of Japan's most scenic spots. The shrine's unique architecture, built over the water, creates a stunning visual spectacle, especially during sunrise and sunset. TikTok+1

Visitors often time their visit to coincide with high tide to witness the torii gate seemingly suspended above the sea. Low tide allows you to walk out to the gate and explore its base. The shrine complex itself is a beautiful example of Heian period architecture, with vermilion pillars and intricate roof designs. TikTok

Beyond the main attraction, the shrine grounds offer a peaceful atmosphere with well-maintained gardens and smaller sub-shrines. It's a place that truly captures the spiritual and aesthetic essence of Japan, making it a must-see for any visitor. TikTok

Exploring Mount Misen

For breathtaking panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea and surrounding islands, a trip up Mount Misen is highly recommended. You can choose to hike up one of the scenic trails, which offer a rewarding experience through lush forests, or opt for the Miyajima Ropeway for a quicker ascent. TikTok

At the summit, you'll find observation decks providing stunning 360-degree vistas. It's a perfect spot for photography and to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. The journey up Mount Misen is as much a part of the experience as the view from the top, with opportunities to encounter local flora and fauna. TikTok

Don't miss the chance to visit the Daisho-in Temple, located at the base of Mount Misen. This ancient Buddhist temple is known for its numerous statues and unique atmosphere, offering a different spiritual dimension to your Miyajima exploration. TikTok

Miyajima's Wild Deer

Miyajima Island is famously home to a population of wild Sika deer that roam freely throughout the island. These deer are considered sacred messengers of the gods in Shinto belief and are accustomed to human presence. They are often seen grazing in parks, near the shrine, and even wandering through the town. TikTok

While interacting with the deer is a unique experience, it's crucial to remember they are wild animals. Visitors are advised not to feed them, as this can disrupt their natural diet and behavior, and can lead to them becoming overly aggressive. It's best to observe them from a respectful distance and enjoy their presence without direct interaction. TikTok

Photographers will find ample opportunities to capture these gentle creatures in their natural habitat. However, be mindful of your surroundings and avoid startling them with sudden movements or loud noises. The deer are an integral part of Miyajima's charm and contribute to its unique, almost magical, atmosphere. TikTok
