Thanks for all the useful advice here. I definitely did too many things for such a short amount of time, but I was limited by budget and was committed to going to at least one of the other main islands. I'm in my 30s, from Ireland, and went with two other friends. [Some photos…

"Yume Kyobashi Castle Road in Hikone is a beautifully preserved shopping street that blends Edo-period aesthetics with modern convenience. Just a short walk from Hikone Castle, the road is lined with traditional white-walled merchant houses that now host cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, and local craft stores. It’s not overly commercialized, so it retains a peaceful, laid-back atmosphere that makes strolling here genuinely relaxing.
The area is especially lovely in spring and autumn, when the scenery becomes picture-perfect. You can sample local specialties like Omi beef croquettes, freshly made mochi, or pick up elegant calligraphy brushes and ceramics. It’s a perfect place to slow down after sightseeing and enjoy a taste of both history and local flavor. Romantic, nostalgic, and full of character."

"The street was empty and only a handful of shops were open. Many close on Mondays and/or Tuesdays so try to avoid those days when you plan to get here. Not sure how crowded it could be, though. We haven't seen many tourists during our three days stay here at all."

"(Trip was made back then on 26 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit)
We thought it would be bustling with activity but the streets were quiet and bare when we visited 2 years ago. It’s quite a nice neighbourhood for a walk but unfortunately a lot of the shops were closed.
While Kyoto was suffering from over-tourism, it’s neighbouring prefecture in Shiga suffers from the lack of it (pre-Covid-19 times of course). Really hope that the town can pick itself up once Japan opens up for tourists again."
