Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Hiratsuka City Museum for its free admission, affordable planetarium shows, and diverse exhibits covering local history, geology, and astronomy. The knowledgeable volunteers and the poignant air raid exhibition are frequently highlighted as positive aspects. However, some note the building's older facilities, including limited elevator access and dated restrooms.

"History museum about the local area's Geology, Biodiversity and culture."

First Decade

"Since it's fairly close, I go there occasionally. The historical, geology, and ethnology exhibits are also excellent, and during the special Miyazawa Kenji exhibition, many very interesting minerals were on display.

My main attraction was the planetarium. The curator's quiet, narrative-spoken explanations were easy to understand and thorough.

This time, I saw two programs: a general screening and a special Starry Sky Walk, which is shown once or twice a month. Each program is 50 minutes long, but it went by in a flash.

The museum is located in the center of town, where the city hall, library, art museum, and junior high school are also located. I was reminded of the huge difference between the starry sky visible there, where there are very few stars, and the starry sky that would be visible if there were no light.

The Starry Sky Walk was easy to understand and fascinating, introducing autumn constellations and Greek mythology.

After the show, I asked a question about Comet Lemmon outside, and they kindly answered my questions.

Before COVID-19, anyone could participate in the stargazing event, but since COVID-19, it has become a lottery, and although I have applied several times, I have never been able to win, which is disappointing."

"Honestly, I was surprised.
I took my kids to visit to kill time on a day off, and in addition to minerals, there was a lot of information about the geology and history of Kanagawa Prefecture, including Jomon pottery, a triangular-rimmed mirror with divine beasts, and incendiary bombs from the war.
It's surprising that admission is free.
You can park for free for 90 minutes if you show your parking ticket at the counter.

The building is old, and half of the toilets are Japanese-style, and even the Western-style ones don't have washlets. There are child-sized toilet seats.
The building is three stories high, but with the exception of wheelchair facilities, you basically have to go up and down the stairs.

The museum touches on the history of not only Hiratsuka City, but also Kanagawa Prefecture. I think this is a museum that many people should visit."
