What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors find the Chibanian Geosite academically significant, particularly for its clear display of geological strata and evidence of Earth's magnetic field reversals. The visitor center and its guides are frequently praised for providing essential context that enhances understanding. However, some note that the site's appeal is diminished if the visitor center is closed, and the terrain requires sturdy footwear.
"Ichihara, chiba ken.
The Chibanian, more widely known as Middle Pleistocene (its previous informal name), is an age in the international geologic timescale or a stage in chronostratigraphy, being a division of the Pleistocene Epoch within the ongoing Quaternary Period.[4] The Chibanian name was officially ratified in January 2020. It is currently estimated to span the time between 0.770 Ma (770,000 years ago) and 0.129 Ma (129,000 years ago), also expressed as 770–126 ka"

"Cool place but it’s not as fun if you go there when the visitor centre is closed as there’s not much information once you get there."

"This is what is known as the Chibanian. You can see a layer where the geomagnetic field has reversed, but you wouldn't understand it without an explanation.
It's just an ordinary layer.
However, it is an important layer academically.
You cannot get close when the river floods.
There is also construction work being done on the viewing course, so you cannot enter during those times.
It's about a 5-minute walk from the visitor center."
