Planning for the Shimanami Kaido, starting in Imabari
The Shimanami Kaido is a popular bicycle route in Japan that runs around 72km (45 miles), crossing 6 islands between Onimichi on Honshu and Imabari on Shikoku. I did the Shimanami Kaido a month ago, and wanted to share some useful information on planning for it to make it easier…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the breathtaking views of the Kurushima Bridge, especially at night, and the hotel's charming retro atmosphere. The friendly staff and good food, particularly the Japanese breakfast, are frequently highlighted. However, some find the facilities a bit dated and advise caution with bike rental recommendations.
"What a lovely place!!!
The view from the lobby is out of this world. Especially at night.
The place has a slightly 70s/80s feel to it, and some of their facilities are a bit dated, but it makes it even more authentic and lovable. The staff, while their English is very poor, are super-lovely, and go out of their way to help you.
The bike rental place is right next door, so you don't have to walk much to get ready for your island hopping trip.
The restaurant has mostly Western food, which is actually quite decent, it was the first time in three weeks that I had Western food. (The breakfast was Japanese food. VERY GOOD.)
Would love to return one day and bike more."

"The place where you get your "trophy" (pay for it) for completing the Shimanami Kaido - if you travel from Onomichi. If you start from Imabari then you get yours here too before tackling your first bridge cause there is a lack of variety of Shimanami Kaido goods in Onomichi side (you get some at U2 but not as much as here).
Other wise the view is great for the right side of the Kurushima Bridge. For its left profile, please climb a little bit more (past the short tunnel) to go to the Kurushima Strait Observatory."

"Nice place with a great view, but the bicycle rental system was hectic and crowded even though it was a work day. Their cross bikes are very good, but they recommended an electric mini-bike to my wife, which was not well-suited for the Shimanami Kaido bike ride. If you rent bikes there, make sure to book the bikes before and find out yourselves which bike is the right one for you. Don’t trust them to find you the bike that you need."
