Kagoshima, a seaside city on Japan’s Kyushu Island, is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. It’s best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. At its base, the Nagisa Lava Trail winds through lava fields filled with boulders. Once set on an isolated island, the volcano became connected to the Osumi Peninsula after an eruption in 1914 #kagoshima #takoyaki #japan #friends #saku...

Reviews Summary

Visitors find the Nagisa Lava Trail to be a unique and less-trafficked gem, offering stunning volcanic landscapes and a relaxing footbath. While some note the trail's length and the mix of paved and natural paths, the opportunity to get close to Sakurajima and the charming stray cats make it a worthwhile experience.

"It's a trail that's off the beaten path for sure. I walked the entire thing from the south side back to the footbath and I only saw 2 people on the way. At around 2 hours before sunset, the view was absolutely stunning and it was a cool 21 degrees. It definitely doesn't seem like it gets as much love as the other tourist spots, but it was a really nice walk with a ton of stray cats, most of which are quite friendly!"

Johnny Lam

"Beautiful walk, although not terribly maintained. Lots of stray cats, most very cute (apparently people leave their cats here?). Cute view of a small private harbor in one of the mini-bays.

Definitely recommend a bike, the trail is rather long without water."

Max Stanton

"A pleasant walk along the rugged coast. My English is not perfect, but for me, "trail" meant something much more sporty. Nope, you can gladly walk that one in high heels. I disliked the idea of a wide asphalted path in a geopark. Thankfully there are a few paths where you can wander off and reach the shore. It's much more fun. Beside natural basaltic rocks erected erratically on both sides and only partly revegetated, you will see a few sculptures with Haiku (in that case, it's poetry on the sakurajima). They are transliterated in romaji but unfortunately not always translated.
I started on the trail at the far end of the ferry terminal and it took me a good hour to walk back (slowly). The trail ends at the very pleasant foot bath with hot volcanic water, which is why I recommend it!"
