Reviews Summary
Mount Kayagatake is celebrated for its breathtaking 360-degree summit views, especially in autumn, and its well-maintained circular hiking trails. The historical significance of the Kyuya Fukada monument adds a unique cultural layer to the experience. While the hike is rewarding, some sections are steep and require good fitness.
"Parking lots and buses from Nirasaki get crowded on weekends, so get there early!
The hiking trail has many steep sections with chains, but it's best to go counterclockwise.
There are 360-degree views from the summit, but autumn is recommended rather than summer."

"This is the final resting place of Kyuya Fukada. A monument stands beside the trail just a few minutes below the summit. He died in 1971 at the age of 68 (of a cerebral hemorrhage).
Fukada Memorial Park is located near the parking lot immediately below the trailhead.
One of the great things about climbing this mountain is that you can do a circular route.
On the way there, it's a gentle, gradual climb up to just before Onnaiwa, and then it's a fairly steep climb, including some winding paths, to the ridge. Even after passing the Kyuya Fukada monument, the climb continues to the summit, but the summit offers a great view.
To the west are Mt. Yatsugatake, to the south Mt. Kaikoma, Mt. Senjogatake (the tip of Mt. Kitadake), and the Houou Sanzan, and to the east Mt. Kinpu and Mt. Kobushigatake. And to the southeast is Mt. Fuji.
On the way back, you can make a circular route by descending the gentle ridge path.
It's an affordable mountain that offers great views in about four hours."

"The shape of the mountain, called Niseyatsu, looks like a slightly smaller miniature of Yatsugatake. As it is an old volcano, it forms a majestic independent mountain massif. It is well known as the final resting place of Kyuya Fukada, author of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan, and is well-equipped with parking lots and well-maintained hiking trails, attracting hikers. Its appeal is the magnificent panorama, where you can see the Northern Alps, Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Okuchichibu up close."
