Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the awe-inspiring presence of the Great Buddha and the serene atmosphere of Kotoku-in. The scenic Enoden train ride and the beautiful views from Hasedera Temple are also frequently highlighted as major draws. Some find the site can get quite crowded, particularly during peak times, and suggest strategic timing to enhance the experience.

"The Buddha is beautiful and easy to get to from Tokyo via public transit. It was 200? or 300 ? yen ( $2 ) to go view it and only 50 yen to go INSIDE it. Not much else in the immediate area. I walked to the beach but there wasn't much in that area but sand. There are public beaches but I didn't see a city bus ? FYI: As you leave the train heading for the buddha watch on the opposite side of the street for a 100 yen souvenier shop !! As you have probably noticed souveniers are way overpriced in Tokyo. So this little jaunt to the statue is alone worth the opportunity to load up on stuff for your friends :) Nice stuff too ! I got a patch, magnets, friendship bracelets...."

"Visiting Kōtoku-in Temple in Kamakura is an unforgettable experience. The highlight of the temple is, of course, the majestic Great Buddha (Daibutsu), a bronze statue that has stood in the open air for centuries. Standing over 13 meters tall, it radiates both strength and serenity, making it one of Japan’s most iconic cultural symbols.

The temple grounds are peaceful and easy to explore, with plenty of space to take in the view of the Buddha from different angles. For a small fee, you can even step inside the statue, which adds an extra layer of fascination to the visit.

However, be careful if you visit during the warmer months, inside the Buddha it gets extremely hot, and you may quickly feel out of breath.

Not far from the statue, there is a small souvenir shop offering a variety of keepsakes, from charms and amulets to postcards and miniature Buddha figures. It’s a nice spot to pick up a meaningful memento of your visit, whether as a personal memory or a gift for someone back home.

Kōtoku-in is very accessible, just a short walk from Hase Station, and it makes a perfect stop when combining with other attractions like Hase-dera Temple or a stroll down Komachi Street. While it can get crowded, especially on weekends, the sense of history and tranquility is still present."

"I personally think this one can be skipped. The ride there will be longer than how much time you will spend at this temple. There's literally just a buddha statue in a big open field. Since that is the only thing to look at, it's a nice break to stop by and you won't be fighting tourists for photos. Only 300 yen to enter. Security guard was much nicer than the person selling the tickets."
