What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Kaminoyama Castle is highly praised for its stunning panoramic views, especially the unforgettable winter scenery from the top floor. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the well-done reconstruction, noting it's a beautiful and serene destination. While some wish for more extensive English explanations, the overall experience is considered highly positive and a top castle visit in Japan.
"Very nice castle with a later build tower. U have beside a spring where u can bath your feeds.
I like at most the loneliness and the view over the town.
One of my top five castles in Japan."

"One of the most beautiful castles in Japan, and the grounds are beautiful. The view from the upper Windows is also pretty amazing. Kaminoyama is a nice little town, and there are mountain parks and a smallish ski resort, if memory serves."
Douglas Howard
"I'm not sure why the rating is relatively low, I must say this is one of the best reconstructed castles I have been to (I'd probably rate this higher than Osaka Castle). Size wise it's probably smaller than Matsumoto Castle, albeit big enough to have 4 floors.
One of the top reasons to visit is the view at the top floor, our jaw dropped when we stepped out to the observatory: the winter view facing the Zao Mountains is a view that I'd never forget.
The other sections of the museum illustrate the local history of Kaminoyama and the Yamagata region. We quite enjoy the Ground Floor exhibitions, which have quite a bit of English explanation, and in this day and age, we have translation app anyway, so it wasn't too big of an issue. Our favourite is the Zao Mountain museum, so if you happened to go to / plan to go to Zao Onsen, this place would be a nice side quest.
The walk from the station wasn't too bad, it only takes 10 mins. We also passed by a bakery in front of the castle and bought some snacks and sweets.
It's a weekend and wasn't crowded at all.
The winter view is very magical."
