What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mano Dam is highly praised for its extensive and impressive dinosaur exhibits, including realistic models and fossils, making it a top destination for paleontology enthusiasts. Visitors appreciate the bilingual signage and hands-on activities, though some note the on-site restaurant is overpriced and the museum is undergoing renovations.
"I -love- this park and museum! All of the signs are in both English and Japanese, so I really felt like I was learning something. Every other museum I've been to, including the National Gallery in Ueno, Tokyo, was only in Japanese-- it's not their fault, but going through those museums really felt like a waste of time. Not here!
The architecture is really unique, and the range of specimens is top-notch. Seeing the fossil prep room was a unique, cool experience.
Two warnings for visitors: the restaurant is over-priced and underwhelming; best avoid it, really. Also, the museum is slowly undergoing renovation, which is to be finished in 2023. It wasn't too bad when I went, in April 2021, but your experience may be different because of this construction."

"The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (FPDM) is one of the world’s top three dinosaur museums, located in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 2000, the museum is renowned for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and exhibits.
The museum’s main exhibition hall spans 4,500 square meters and is divided into three main zones: Dinosaur World, Earth Sciences, and History of Life. Visitors can marvel at over 40 dinosaur skeletons, including full-scale replicas and real fossils, as well as life-sized animatronic dinosaurs that bring these ancient creatures to life.
In addition to its impressive indoor exhibits, the museum also offers a unique outdoor experience at the Field Station, where visitors can participate in fossil excavation activities. This hands-on experience allows guests to discover and learn about the process of paleontological research.
The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is not only a center for public education and enjoyment but also a hub for scientific research, contributing significantly to the field of paleontology."
