What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the Ikuta Ryokuchi Rose Garden's stunning variety of roses and its free entry, maintained by dedicated volunteers. While the seasonal opening and uphill walk are noted, the beauty of the blooms and the charming approach make it a highly recommended 'secret gem'.
"We visited this rose garden after a lovely stranger at the bus stop told us about it.
The roses bloom is only in Spring and Autumn. There are venders selling roses in pots as well.
Beautiful garden and easy to walk around with a coffee truck for you to enjoy a cup of coffee at.
There are a few flight of stairs to climb but we noticed if you have a car, you can drive to the carpark next to the garden."

"Although open only at certain times of year (check the website!), this is a fantastic rose garden that is well worth the 10-15 minute walk from the station. There are a huge variety of roses here, and most have been painstakingly labelled in both Japanese and English by the volunteers that maintain the place. Yes, volunteers! What a fantastic job they have done (do donate when you visit - it costs nothing to get in.)
Visitors should be aware of the following:
The walk from the station to the rose garden is made much better by a special rose-lined walkway that starts from about halfway from the station. It is on only only side of the road, so don't miss it.
At the time of this post (May 2022) visitors are asked to check their temperature with an automatic machine, and disinfect their hands using the dispensers provided.
Once at the main entrance don't be deceived...there is still a few minutes to go, and this is up a steep hill with steps. There is a guide rail and the floor is lined so it isn't muddy, but elderly visitors may need assistance.
There is no eating and drinking inside. There are basic toilet facilities available.
Last entry is early (at 4.00pm - but check the website), and the volunteers ask every to leave at 4.30!
Finally, it is not a big area and so it can feel crowded. HOWEVER it is still worth it for the beautiful flowers, lawns, and special displays like the 'Royal Garden' (where rose varieties named after global and Japanese royalty are gathered.)
Don't pass this place by if it is open and in bloom...do stop and smell the roses!"

One of the unique aspects of visiting is the approach; a special rose-lined walkway guides you from Tsurumi-Ryokuchi Station. The garden is not a large area, which can lead to it feeling crowded during peak times, but the sheer beauty of the flowers often makes it worthwhile.
Visitors should note that eating and drinking are not allowed inside the garden. However, a coffee truck is usually available near the entrance for refreshments. The garden also has specific closing times, with last entry being early in the afternoon, so plan your visit accordingly. Despite these considerations, the Ikuta Ryokuchi Rose Garden is consistently praised as a 'secret gem' and a must-visit for rose enthusiasts.

This curated collection offers a unique perspective on the history and prestige associated with different rose cultivars. The meticulous labeling by volunteers, in both Japanese and English, further enhances the visitor's appreciation for the diversity on display.
Beyond the main rose displays, the surrounding Tsurumi-Ryokuchi Park offers year-round beauty with different seasonal flowers, making the area a pleasant destination even outside the rose garden's open periods. However, for the full Ikuta Ryokuchi Rose Garden experience, timing your visit for the peak bloom seasons is essential to witness its full splendor.
