"Was able to discover a new heritage related to the Tokugawa family."

"This is the remains of Minakuchi Castle. The moat and stone walls were more solid than I expected, and from the information board, the area where the museum is now located appears to have been positioned like an outer citadel. I wasn't able to see it due to time constraints, but it looked nice.
The palace area was used as a school."

"Since the renovation work on Onari Bridge seems to be complete, I stopped by while on a motorcycle tour.
This castle is located in Minakuchi Town, Koka City.
I'm a 60-year-old former Shiga craftsman, but I still think it's Koga City lol.
I've visited many times in the past, but this time I stopped by to photograph the diorama on display in the museum, which uses a double-story turret (I inquired in advance about permission).
Please note that some things are OK to photograph inside the museum, and others are not.
Apparently, Minakuchi Castle was built during the Edo period as a lodging for Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, under the supervision of Kobori Enshu, who served as the construction magistrate.
The main citadel, where the magnificent palace once stood, is now used as the grounds of Minakuchi High School, located across the road. The museum is open to the public in the outer citadel.
Please note that the museum's closing days change depending on the season (open every Monday and Tuesday in October, and on national holidays on those days).
For parking, please use the community center next door or the Omi Railway's Minakuchi Jonan Station parking lot."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Historical Significance of Minakuchi Castle

Minakuchi Castle holds a unique place in Japanese history, primarily as a strategic lodging point for the Tokugawa shogunate. Built during the Edo period, its construction was overseen by Kobori Enshu, a renowned figure in Japanese garden design and architecture. The castle served as a temporary residence for Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu during his journeys to Kyoto, highlighting its importance in facilitating the shogun's movements and asserting Tokugawa authority. After its role as a shogunate lodging, it later functioned as the residence for the Minakuchi Domain, further solidifying its administrative and political significance in the region. Reddit

The castle's design reflects its purpose as a lodging rather than a primary defensive fortress. It features a relatively simple square layout, with a main citadel and an outer citadel. While the main citadel is now occupied by a high school's sports grounds, the remnants of the outer citadel, including its substantial moats and well-preserved stone walls, offer tangible evidence of its past grandeur. These surviving structures are now designated as a Shiga Prefecture Historic Site, preserving a piece of Japan's feudal history for future generations. Reddit

Visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the castle's history and layout through the museum located in the outer citadel. This museum often displays dioramas and artifacts that help visualize the castle as it once stood. The experience of walking through the ruins, imagining the shogun's retinue passing through, provides a compelling connection to Japan's Edo period and the immense power of the Tokugawa shogunate. Reddit

Exploring the Ruins and Museum

The Minakuchi Castle Ruins offer a layered exploration experience, combining outdoor historical remnants with an indoor museum. The most striking features of the ruins are the substantial moats and the beautifully constructed stone walls. These walls, noted for their unique curves and solid plasterwork, are a testament to the craftsmanship of the era and are a highlight for many visitors. Reddit Walking along the perimeter of these moats and examining the stonework provides a sense of the castle's former scale and defensive capabilities.

The restored turret in the outer citadel is the only standing structure from the original castle complex and offers a visual anchor for understanding the castle's architecture. While the main castle keep is gone, replaced by modern facilities, the preserved outer elements allow for a significant historical immersion. It's important to note that the main castle area is now a high school sports field, so exploration is focused on the designated historical sites. Reddit

The museum, situated within the outer citadel, is crucial for a comprehensive visit. It provides context through information boards, and often features dioramas that reconstruct the castle's appearance. Visitors should be aware that photography rules within the museum can vary, so it's advisable to check with staff before taking pictures. Reddit The museum's operating hours are also subject to seasonal changes, so confirming these in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.
