Reviews Summary

Many visitors have a wonderful time renting kimonos, praising the fair prices, patient staff, and the joy of exploring Kyoto's historic sites. However, some have experienced significant disappointment due to strict late return policies and perceived rudeness from staff, which can overshadow the cultural experience. Reddit

"We loved our experience here for kimono rental. Prices were very fair. The staff was patient while I looked at different styles. There are always options to upgrade at each stage but the staff wasn’t pushy about it. They have a book of hair styles and also they had a map you can take a photo of that shows where are good places in the area to take your pictures. We walked about 10 mins to a temple/park and had amazing photos. We walked in to make a reservation for two days later. I think if you book online with a reservation there was a small discount."

Julia Berlin

"We had a very disappointing experience at this kimono rental shop. We rented for less than 3 hours because the store closes at 5:30, and were told to return the kimono before then. Unfortunately, we went to the wrong branch first due to the confusingly similar name, and arrived at this location just 8 minutes past the return time. The shop was still open, yet they charged us an additional ¥2200 for being slightly late.

This was by far the worst customer service I’ve experienced in Japan, where kindness and hospitality are usually the standard. Instead, we were met with rudeness and zero understanding of our situation as first-time visitors. The kimono itself was just okay, but their rigid and unfriendly attitude left a terrible impression.

I strongly recommend that others avoid this rental shop and instead choose one that is kinder, more understanding, and respectful toward customers. This experience completely ruined the joy of what should have been a beautiful cultural activity.

They don’t have an option of selecting no stars so I give 0 to this place. Never ever going to come back here. Worst experience ever"

Steffi Gogoi

"A great experience! You can reserve online the same day before they open, and there’s a good selection of kimono, the fancier ones having extra fees. Highly recommend for photo ops around Kyoto and it’s beautiful shrines and temples"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Choosing Your Perfect Kimono

Selecting a kimono is a highlight of the rental experience. Most shops offer a wide array of colors, patterns, and styles. Consider the season and your planned activities when making your choice. For instance, lighter, more vibrant colors might be ideal for spring cherry blossom viewing, while deeper hues could suit autumn temple visits. Many shops have books showcasing different hair and accessory options to help you visualize the complete look. TikTok+1

Don't hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations. They are experienced in helping visitors find kimonos that suit their preferences and body types. Showing them inspiration photos from social media can also be very effective in guiding their selection process. Remember that some of the most elaborate or unique kimonos might come with an additional fee, so clarify pricing upfront if you have your heart set on a premium design. TikTokReddit

The fitting process is usually quite thorough, ensuring the kimono is tied securely and comfortably. This attention to detail is crucial for both aesthetics and practicality, allowing you to walk and explore with ease throughout the day. TikTok

Maximizing Your Kimono Photoshoot

Kyoto is a photographer's paradise, especially when you're dressed in a beautiful kimono. The Gion district is a top choice, with its traditional wooden machiya houses and atmospheric alleys providing a stunning backdrop. Wandering through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka offers charming, preserved streets that feel like stepping back in time. Instagram+1

Iconic landmarks like Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Yasaka Shrine are also incredibly popular for kimono photos. The temple's wooden stage offers panoramic views, while the shrine's vermillion gates create a striking contrast. For a more natural setting, consider the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, though it can get crowded. InstagramReddit

To truly capture the magic, consider booking a professional photographer for a session. They know the best spots and times for lighting and can help you pose authentically. Alternatively, even with just your phone, taking photos during the golden hours (early morning or late afternoon) can significantly enhance the quality of your shots. TikTok

Navigating Rental Shops & Etiquette

When choosing a kimono rental shop, look for those that are foreigner-friendly and have English-speaking staff, as this can greatly simplify communication and the rental process. TikTok Many shops offer online booking, which is often recommended for securing your preferred time slot and potentially a discount. Reddit

Be punctual with your return time. Shops typically close around 5:30 PM, and late returns can result in substantial fees, even for minor delays. This strictness can be a point of frustration for visitors, so double-check the return policy. Reddit While the staff are generally helpful, some reviews mention instances of rudeness or lack of understanding, particularly regarding late returns. Being polite and communicative can help ensure a smoother experience. Reddit

Understand the pricing structure. Basic rentals are affordable, but upgrades for premium kimonos or additional services like professional photography will increase the cost. Always clarify what is included in your package to avoid surprises. InstagramReddit
