Reviews Summary

Visitors generally praise Sora to Nagomi Kyoto for its authentic cultural experience, with many highlighting the warmth and educational approach of the hosts. The option to wear a kimono adds to the immersive feel. However, some guests found the room size restrictive for larger groups and questioned the value for money for shorter or less engaging sessions.

"Amazing experience with a charismatic woman/teacher..The tea ceremony isn’t about drinking different types of teas and eating sweets but of learning how to make matcha tea. The only tea that you will drink is the one that you make if you like it. And the only sweets given will be the one that you were given before starting the tea ceremony.

I went in thinking that I won’t like it but surprisingly,I did;not only the ceremony but the cheerfulness and friendliness of our teacher. We enjoyed it. Thanks!"

"Tea Ceremony Nagomi was an absolute gem and one of the most memorable parts of our trip. Our teacher was warm, patient, and truly passionate about sharing the beauty of the Japanese tea ceremony. Wearing a traditional kimono made the experience feel even more special and immersive.

We were lucky to share the ceremony with a lovely couple who added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere—such a delight to meet fellow travelers in such a serene setting! The matcha tea was rich and smooth, and the traditional sweets served alongside it were absolutely delicious.

If you're visiting Japan and want to experience a meaningful cultural tradition, we highly recommend trying the tea ceremony at Nagomi. It’s an experience you’ll cherish!"

"Friendly and nice people, but:

The room is absolutely so small to fit in 14 people at the same time. Maybe good for 6-8 people.

The experience was not anything special. Definitely not 3500 yen. If you deduct the time spent on greetings and taking pictures, the main experience is about 30-35 min.

I know tea ceremony is famous here. So I booked this place last minute while I could not book the more popular ones. if a real tea ceremony is some cool experience, I am sure this place is not that! And if all tea ceremonies are like this, I would not recommend it!

I would not have booked this place if I had read all low reviews."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of the Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony, or 'Chanoyu,' is more than just drinking tea; it's a choreographed ritual steeped in Zen Buddhism. It emphasizes harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku). Every movement, from cleaning the utensils to whisking the matcha, is deliberate and graceful. The goal is to create a moment of mindfulness and appreciation for the present. TikTokReddit

At Sora to Nagomi, you'll experience a simplified yet authentic version of this ancient practice. You'll learn the proper way to hold the tea bowl, whisk the powdered green tea (matcha) with hot water using a bamboo whisk ('chasen'), and savor the resulting frothy beverage. The accompanying sweets ('wagashi') are chosen to balance the tea's subtle bitterness and are often seasonal and artistically crafted. Reddit

Many visitors find the ceremony to be a deeply calming and insightful experience, offering a unique window into Japanese culture. The hosts are typically passionate about sharing their knowledge, making it an educational and enjoyable activity for all ages. TikTok+1

Kimono Rental for an Authentic Experience

Renting a kimono for your tea ceremony can significantly enhance the cultural immersion and provide fantastic photo opportunities. Many venues, including those offering tea ceremonies, partner with kimono rental shops or offer rentals directly. TikTok+1

When you rent a kimono, you'll typically have a selection of designs and colors to choose from. The rental process usually includes professional dressing, which involves several layers and sashes to ensure the kimono fits perfectly and looks authentic. Some packages also include hair styling and accessories, completing the traditional look. TikTok

Having a kimono on not only makes the tea ceremony feel more special but also transforms your exploration of Kyoto. Imagine strolling through historic Gion or posing in a serene garden – the kimono adds an undeniable aesthetic and a memorable touch to your Japanese adventure. TikTok+1

Navigating Kyoto's Gion District

Gion is Kyoto's most famous geisha district, known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, teahouses, and exclusive restaurants. It's a place where you can still catch glimpses of geiko (Kyoto geisha) and maiko (apprentice geisha) on their way to appointments, particularly in the early evening. TikTok

Exploring Gion is best done on foot. Wander down Hanami-koji Street, the district's main thoroughfare, and then venture into the smaller side streets for a more authentic feel. You'll find charming shops selling local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. The Shirakawa Canal area offers picturesque views, especially during cherry blossom season. TikTok

When visiting Gion, remember to be respectful. Geiko and maiko are working professionals, and it's important not to obstruct their path, touch them, or take intrusive photos. Many TikTok and Instagram creators emphasize the importance of observing from a distance and appreciating the atmosphere without disturbing the residents. TikTok
