Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the impressive scale of Yubara Dam and the stunning panoramic views of Lake Yubara, especially the magical morning mist. The unique 'Meisen Sunayu' mixed-bathing hot spring is a highlight, offering a memorable experience with a dam view. However, the steep and potentially slippery footpath requires caution, and public transport access is limited, making a car essential for most visitors.

"Lake Yubara, the closest dam to the source of the Asahi River system, is one of the first-class rivers (Asahi River, Takahashi River, Yoshii River) that have water sources in Okayama Prefecture, and boasts the largest area in the Chugoku region! ️ Downstream is Yubara Onsen ♨ There is ``Meisen Sunayu'' which was given the highest rating with Yokozuna of the West in the open-air bath ranking list The view from the top road is fantastic!! ️The mist that hangs down gives a nice taste 😊 You can see a panoramic view of the mixed bathing bath, but please refrain from using binoculars or super telephoto lenses. You won't be impressed by that behavior 🙅‍♀️"

"The Asahikawa Dam is also famous in the Asahikawa River system, but the Yubara Dam is located further upstream. Its flooded area (the area that supplies water to rice paddies, etc.) is said to be the largest in the Chugoku region."

"I heard it's within walking distance of Yubara Onsen, so I decided to go.

From the footpath entrance next to Saba Onsen, you have to climb a zigzag path built along the steep slope. It's quite steep and takes about 15 minutes, but you won't reach the top without taking breaks along the way.

There are many slippery sections, and one side of the footpath is a simple cliff, so there is a risk of falling.

I checked with the staff at my lodging just to be sure, but I don't recommend going alone; going by car is the best option.

However, if you manage to make it to the top and catch your breath at the observation deck, you'll quickly reach the dam, making it a shortcut compared to taking the road.

As for the view, it's as you'd expect. Around 9 a.m. in November, the chilly air and the warm waters of Lake Yubara create a continuous morning mist over the hot spring town, and when the sun shines through, it creates a fantastical landscape."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Majesty of Yubara Dam

Yubara Dam is a significant concrete gravity dam on the Asahi River system, located in Okayama Prefecture. It's renowned for holding back the expansive Lake Yubara, which boasts the largest water surface area in the Chugoku region. The dam's impressive scale is a testament to its engineering, providing vital water resources for irrigation and other uses. The sheer size of the dam is a sight to behold, offering a powerful contrast to the serene natural landscape it inhabits. Reddit

Visitors often marvel at the view from the top road, which provides a sweeping panorama of the lake and the surrounding mountains. The dam's location upstream of the popular Yubara Onsen town adds to its appeal, making it a key attraction for those visiting the area. The interplay of the dam's structure with the natural environment creates a unique and memorable visual experience. Reddit

Experiencing Yubara Onsen and Meisen Sunayu

Just downstream from Yubara Dam lies Yubara Onsen, a charming hot spring town famous for its unique bathing facilities. The most talked-about feature is the 'Meisen Sunayu', a mixed-bathing open-air bath that has garnered significant attention and high ratings. This bath offers a truly immersive experience, allowing visitors to relax in the warm, therapeutic waters while enjoying a direct view of the impressive dam. Reddit

Travelers often describe the experience at Meisen Sunayu as both relaxing and picturesque. However, it's important to note that it is a mixed-bathing facility, and visitors are advised to be respectful of privacy and etiquette. The presence of hydrangeas blooming along the dam's left bank in summer adds an extra layer of natural beauty to the area, enhancing the overall appeal of a visit to Yubara. Reddit

Navigating the Footpath and Access

For the adventurous, a footpath offers a more direct, albeit challenging, route to the top of Yubara Dam. This zigzagging path, built along a steep slope, requires a moderate level of fitness and caution. It can be quite steep, with slippery sections and a sheer drop on one side, making it a route best undertaken with a companion and appropriate footwear. Reddit

Many visitors opt for the easier and safer option of driving to the top road, which provides excellent vantage points without the physical exertion or risk associated with the footpath. This highlights the importance of considering personal mobility and comfort when planning your visit. While the footpath is a shortcut, the drive offers a more relaxed way to appreciate the dam's grandeur. Reddit
