Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Kasashima for its beautifully preserved historic townscape and the authentic 'old Japanese vibe.' The island's charm, coupled with the lingering art from the Setouchi Triennale, makes for a unique experience. However, some note the limited dining and shopping options and the potential for crowds during peak times.

"The city was beautiful. I visited on the second last day of the Setouchi Triennale (8 Nov). People were friendly. I walked the area but there was a shuttle bus that ran the route (which is very convenient since most rural towns don't have busses operational over the weekend). I'm not that interested in the art and mainly came to the island to see this town as I like the old vibe of Japanese towns and don't like the new modernisation of homes nowadays. The people living there have to work hard to keep their town the way it is and it shows their love for their area!"

Monica Botha

"Kasashima is one of the sites of the Seto Uchi Art Trienniale and the whole village is beautiful. It's also a little saddening when you look behind the main thoroughfares. You'll see signs of Japan's depopulation and wonder for how many more years it will exist. Visit now, the autumn session is really the best time to go."

Judy OBrien

"Very beautiful island and a lot to see. This place was very nice. Close to the ocean, so a nice place to go and have a rest while walking or biking around. Bike rental available at the ferry office!! The whole island can be biked around in less than 2 hours. A bit hilly in parts, but worth it!!"
