What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Matsumoto City Museum of Art for its inspiring Yayoi Kusama exhibition, describing it as otherworldly and mesmerizing. The museum is noted for its beautiful display of art and the charming grounds, including a cafe and gift shop. While some find the exhibition size modest, the vibrant and colorful nature of Kusama's work is a major highlight for art lovers.
"Great experience for the work of Yayoi Kusama. The museum is recommended as the best place in Japan to witness Yayoi's work (Matsumoto is her place of birth). The interactive part is memorable (photos and videos not allowed in these rooms, hence no media added to my post on these aspects). I would say 30-60min are enough to visit the museum - there are some other areas besides Yoyoi's rooms. I would have liked more Yayoi's merchandise in the shop. Definitely a must-see in Matsumoto!"

"Great for Yayoi Kusama Fans, but a small museum.
We came specifically to see the permanent Yayoi Kusama collection, which is excellent (don't miss the stunning outdoor pieces!). The entrance fee is very reasonable/affordable.
However, the overall museum space is quite small. The exhibition area is limited, so there isn't a huge amount of content to see outside of the main Kusama works. It's a quick visit, but definitely worth it if you are a fan of her art!"

"So fun to see the museum that honors Kusama. We were just in Naoshima 10 days ago, home to her yellow pumpkin and hollow red pumpkin. The installations she created at this museum are extraordinary. There was also a fabulous exhibition of Japanese contemporary artists that we thoroughly enjoyed."
