What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Tomi Observatory offers rewarding hikes with stunning panoramic views, especially from its northern peak. While the Fukumanji Temple trail is beginner-friendly, other routes can be steep and challenging. Visitors appreciate the natural beauty, seasonal wildflowers, and cultural connections, though some note the aging observation deck.
"This mountain is located in Godo, Minami Boso City.
It's also the home of Satomi Yoshizane's daughter, Fushihime, and Yoshizane's dog, Yafusa, who captured the head of their enemy, Anzai Kagetsura, in the Nansō Satomi Hakkenden (Legend of the Eight Dogs of Nansō).
It's a popular local hiking trail, suitable even for beginners. The most common route starts from Fukumanji Temple. Walking sticks are available at the trailhead. While beginners are welcome, please be aware that the trail is steep and has poor footing in some areas. The round trip can take more than three hours, so be sure to hydrate. There are several benches along the way, and public restrooms above the seventh station. The mountain has two peaks: the southern peak (Kannon Peak), with its Kannon Hall, and the northern peak (Konpira Peak), the highest peak with its observation deck and Konpira Shrine. The stunning view of Minami Boso from the summit made the climb worthwhile.
This mountain is a sacred site for the animated film "Trapezium," where four volunteers from the east, west, north, and south climbed the mountain with Sachiko and her friends. It's moving to be able to see the same scenery that Azuma Yuu saw. The original novel was written by former Nogizaka46 member Takayama Kazumi, who is from Minamiboso City."

"On a clear day, you can get a good view of the Boso mountains and the sea. Although the altitude is low, the steep climb at the beginning of the climb, next to a cemetery, is quite tough. However, when the view opens up and you can see the sea, it's exciting."

"This was the 29th mountain I tried as a beginner hike with my wife, after climbing Iyo-ga-take. We were on the way back to Iwai Station.
Iyo-ga-take made such a strong impression on me that it felt like a boring hike, just a leisurely climb up a paved slope. However, the view from the summit was beautiful, with a different view of the ocean than Iyo-ga-take, and it was wonderful.
I think the best part of this mountain is the west side (ocean side), which we descended from. There seem to be two routes, and choosing the more difficult one felt quite adventurous.
This time we climbed two mountains, but since they were low, the strain wasn't too great, and it was a day with a hiking element while enjoying the scenery of Boso."

For a more adventurous and challenging hike, consider the trail from Fusehime Kagoana. This route is known to be steeper and can have poor footing, with sections requiring the use of ropes for ascent and descent. Loose sand can make it slippery, so caution is advised, even on this relatively low mountain.
