Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Tsukubusuma Shrine on Chikubushima Island for its serene atmosphere, rich history, and picturesque setting on Lake Biwa. The ferry journey and the island's spiritual significance are highlighted as major draws, offering a peaceful escape and a glimpse into Japan's cultural heritage. Some note the presence of steps and the limited time on the island as minor considerations.

"A peaceful and culturally rich destination! Tsukubusuma Shrine is located on Chikubushima, a small but scenic island in Lake Biwa. The easiest access is via the Nagahama Port, where a ferry runs approximately every 2.5 hours. The boat ride takes about 35 minutes, and you typically have around 90 minutes on the island before the return trip — which is more than enough to explore comfortably. Admission to the island is 600 yen.

The island features a beautiful temple complex, including a wooden pagoda and the historic Tsukubusuma Shrine, which is dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of everything that flows — water, music, and knowledge. The architecture is impressive, and the atmosphere is serene. Be prepared for a number of stone steps as you make your way around the island.

There are three small cafés near the dock, perfect for a quick drink or snack while waiting for the ferry. A great half-day trip for those interested in Japanese history, spirituality, and scenic views."

"The first thing I noticed when I visited Chikubushima Shrine was the solemn atmosphere, as if the entire island were an object of worship. Though it's a small island floating on Lake Biwa, it's steeped in a long history of religious worship, and I was deeply moved by its venerable background. Historically significant structures remain, including the Karamon gate donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the boat corridor leading to the main hall of Tsukubusuma Shrine, and just one step inside the shrine allows you to feel the weight of Japan's history. The Karamon gate's intricate carvings and colors remain impressive even after the passage of time, testifying to the power and depth of faith of the time.

The day I visited was also very quiet, allowing me to leisurely stroll around the grounds without being bothered by crowds, which was another plus. The boat trip from the lake itself was a special experience, and from the moment I arrived, I felt as if I had entered an extraordinary world. Praying in the tranquility of the shrine grounds, I felt my mind mysteriously clear, and I strongly sensed its power as a power spot.

Chikubushima Shrine is not just a tourist spot, but a special place where nature, history, and faith come together. Surrounded by the beautiful scenery of Lake Biwa, it is well worth a visit to experience the healing and energizing experience."
