Reviews Summary

Visitors are consistently moved by the solemn and sacred atmosphere of Sogenji Stone Gate, appreciating its historical significance as a former royal investiture site and temple. The imposing stone gate and the magnificent banyan tree are highlighted as key attractions, offering a peaceful respite and a connection to Okinawa's past. While the site is largely ruins, its enduring presence and tranquil ambiance make it a memorable stop.

"This is an important place where rituals were held before the investiture of new Ryukyu kings.
It was burned down in war, but the gates and other structures remain, and if you go inside, close your eyes, and feel the breeze, you can feel a solemn atmosphere even though there is nothing there."

"Visited in the morning on February 17, 2024

The remains of a temple in Tomari, Naha City, feature a magnificent stone gate and a large banyan tree. The banyan tree is so magnificent I spent some time looking up at it and touching its bark. A large plaza has been built in front of the tree, and a new miniature model of Sogenji Temple and stone steps have been installed. The temple is gone, but the banyan tree and stone gate still have a lovely feel."

高木カルロス

"Near Makishi, a heavy stone gate suddenly appears in the middle of the town in the direction of Tomari Port, giving off a sense of incongruity and presence. I thought some of the castle's facilities were preserved, but the gate of the temple seems to date back to the very old Ryukyu Dynasty. A large banyan tree covers the stone wall and provides shade over a wide area. It's a park inside, so I think it's a good place to take a short break."
