"📍 Magome-juku 馬籠宿 @ Gifu, Japan 🇯🇵

We visited Magome-juku on 14 November 2025 as the starting point for our Nakasendo walk from Magome to Tsumago, and the experience was truly memorable. Magome-juku is one of the most picturesque and beautifully preserved post towns along the historic Nakasendo Trail, with its iconic stone-paved slope and traditional wooden buildings.

Our taxi from Tsumago dropped us at Magomekan Annex (馬籠館 別館), a very convenient drop-off point right at the village entrance. From there, walking through Magome felt like stepping into the Edo period — charming wooden houses, flowing water channels, souvenir shops, and cosy cafés lining the main slope.

The weather was slightly cloudy, giving the village a soft, nostalgic mood that made the scenery even more atmospheric. The slope offers beautiful viewpoints of the valley, perfect for photography and slow exploration.

Magome-juku is traveller-friendly, offering:
• 🥾 Clear trail markers for the Nakasendo route
• 🍡 Local snacks & cafés (many closing early)
• 🛍️ Souvenir shops with regional crafts
• 🚻 Public washrooms
• 📸 Beautiful stone-paved streets and Edo-style scenery

Before continuing the Nakasendo hike, we enjoyed the peaceful ambience, gentle breeze, and the historical charm unique to Magome.

Overall, Magome-juku is a must-visit, whether you’re hiking the Nakasendo or simply enjoying its beautiful Edo-style townscape.
Atmospheric, scenic, and wonderfully preserved. 🍁🏘️✨"

"My favorite post town along the Nakasendo road besides Tsumago-Juku.
Take a stroll around and you can get a stamp at information center!
There's many food stalls and it's famous for their local specialties Chestnuts.
Lots of souvenir shopping that you shouldn't be missed off. Magome-juku is more lively than other post town."

Yurisa

"We loved the place. We arrived very early in the morning and were almost by ourselves. The shops and restaurants were still closed so we hiked to Tsumago, took the bus back to Magome and the stroll the enchanting post town"
