Nakasendo trail advice from Takayama
Hi all, I'm travelling in Japan right now, and im struggling a bit on organising the days on Nakasendo. Travel "boundaries": I'll spend the night in Takayama the 19.03, and I have to be in Osaka at midday on 23.04. Between those dates, I would like to see and do (part of)…

Nakasendo Trail (Tsumago to Magome) review/info share
My wife and I (34) walked from Tsumago to Magome yesterday (20/04/2024). This is what we learnt/would do differently. - We stayed in Nakatsugawa for two nights to allow the middle day to walk. Specifically at Onn hotel, which was fine. Nakatsugawa however was for us, a dull…

What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are captivated by the magical, serene beauty of the Ochiai Stone Pavement, especially its bamboo forest and traditional village charm. However, many caution that the reproduced cobblestones are extremely slippery when wet, posing a significant hazard even for experienced walkers. Careful footing and appropriate footwear are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
"None of these reviews have walked this path while it was raining and wet. I don’t know who built this path, but I need to speak with them.
We were on a 12 hour hike from Tsumago to Magome to Nagatsugawa on the Nakasendo; it had rained almost 3 inches the day before. By the time we got to this path, most of the surface moisture had evaporated, but the cobblestones were extremely damp, and all of the moss across the stones had become slimy and slippery. I would consider my wife and I advanced amateurs at backpacking, we know how to walk difficult paths, but we got our asses handed to us by these stones. There was no friction. We slipped twice each, got bruised in a few places, and resorted to stepping gingerly in what cracks between the stones we found (where leaf litter had collected) to have some chance at staying upright. It felt like it took 10 minutes to go a few hundred meters.
The bamboo forest was pretty though."

"An old road where the stone-paved road has been reproduced and the surrounding area has been developed. I learned that "Ochiai" is a place name given to the confluence of rivers and roads. Was this place a cultural exchange area with water resources? Or was it a difficult place for transportation due to flooding? Or both?"
JACK SHEPHERD
"I walked along this path on my way from Nakatsugawa station to Magome, following the Nakasendo trail in May 2021 (Spring).
There were no other hikers in sight — it was so serene, beautiful and simply magical. Thank you for preserving this beautiful area."
