ThisIsOsaka! has another hike coming up. How is it that we haven't hiked through Nara Deer Park and up Mt. Wakakusa? Well, that will be addressed Sunday, October 29.

Edit: Two things. There is a 150 yen charge on one leg of the trail for maintenance. We couldn't find the ThisIsOsaka sign this morning, so you'll be looking for the guy in a wide-brimmed hat, cargo pants, and boots. The exit for meeting is exit TWO. The Autumn's colors will…

Here's the proposed trail for the Nara Deer Park/Mt. Wakakusa hike.

We'll go up the milder trail that winds around a bit and avoids going up the steeper part. The trail sneaks up through the forest to the top of the mountain so when we pop out of the trees, we should get our first good view of the city through from the top.

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Mount Wakakusa for its stunning panoramic views of Nara City and its serene, natural beauty. The affordable entrance fee and the charming presence of wild deer are frequently highlighted as major draws. While the hike is generally considered easy to moderate, some may find it a bit steep, and crowds can increase during peak times and the famous Yamayaki festival.

"Beautiful view and a peaceful hike! The scenery from the top was stunning, especially overlooking Nara. A lovely place to enjoy nature and spot some deer along the way."

"Ticket is 150 yen per person. It's a very beautiful and calming place. We didn't go to the peak of the mountain and only stayed around the hill area, but the views are already very beautiful. Definitely much more worth visiting compared to the very crowded Nara Park. You can find deers around these areas too."

"Mount Wakakusa – A Scenic and Refreshing Hike in Nara Park

Mount Wakakusa is a highly recommended spot within Nara Park. The entire hill is covered with lush green grass, offering a serene and picturesque landscape.

Although the mountain stands at 342 meters above sea level, my step-counting app showed an elevation gain equivalent to climbing 48 floors, which likely reflects the actual ascent from the base to the summit.

There are two common hiking trails leading up the mountain. Both are well-maintained and easy to follow, with smooth paths and no major difficulty. For someone with moderate fitness, it takes about 40 to 60 minutes to reach the top without rushing.

From the summit, you can enjoy a stunning bird’s-eye view of Nara City — definitely worth the effort!

Mount Wakakusa is only about a 5–10 minute walk from Tōdai-ji Temple, making it very convenient to visit both in the same day."
