What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Mount Kakuda is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty, offering breathtaking panoramic views from its summit and unique coastal scenery along its Lighthouse Trail. Visitors rave about the spectacular wildflower displays in spring, particularly dogtooth violets and snowdrops, making it a photographer's delight. While generally well-maintained, some steeper sections require caution, and understanding trail variations is key to a fulfilling hike.
"I recommend the Todai course. The view going up is spectacular."

"Mt. Tsunoda is amazing in spring. The only problem is that you can't go any further if you're taking photos of the Anemone hepatica, Dogtooth violets, Japanese anemone, Japanese anemone, violets, and epimedium in full bloom. The Anemone hepatica and Dogtooth violets on this mountain are amazing.
Park your car in the Lighthouse Course parking lot and take a sea to summit from the coast, which becomes a swimming beach in summer, to the top of Mt. Tsunoda. Once you've reached the peak, take a break at the Kannon Hall with its open view and you'll be soothed by the rice field scenery of the Niigata Plain.
I recommend taking the Lighthouse Course on the way down, as you head down towards the lighthouse while looking out at the sea, which is a unique and interesting situation."

"I parked my car in the southernmost parking lot at Kakutahama. It's quite spacious and has a toilet. There's also a convenient shoe washing area. Even if the parking lot is full, there's still plenty of space ahead, so don't worry.
Starting the hike from the lighthouse course, I climbed the rocky cliffs of Cape Kakuta via stairs to the lighthouse. Even from here, the ocean spread out before me, offering a spectacular view.
From the lighthouse, I climbed the Umanose Ridge, which was quite steep. In the narrow areas, there were chains on both sides, and they were well maintained. It's a rare trail, as there aren't many places where you can enjoy both the mountains and the ocean.
After walking along the ridge for about an hour, dogtooth violets appeared. Cute red flowers spread on both sides of the hiking trail, and in some places they grow in clusters on the slopes. This trail was in full bloom now. There were also various types of snowdrops, so I enjoyed the flowers.
Once the bamboo grass came into view, I was mostly following the ridge to the summit. It took about 15 minutes from the fork in the road to the Goka Pass course to reach the summit.
Unfortunately, it was hazy and we couldn't see much.
We took just under two hours as we photographed the flowers as we climbed.
We descended via the Sakura Ridge Course. It was a fairly steep climb. The bamboo grass area was quite long, and our pants would get wet from the night dew and rain, so we recommend bringing water-repellent pants. As we descended the bamboo grass area, dogtooth violets were spreading, but they were past their peak and many of the flowers were damaged. The best time to see the flowers seems to vary depending on the course, so it might be best to choose depending on the season.
We headed out onto the national highway and headed down to the coast on the right, but be careful as there are no signs for the trailhead for the Sakura Ridge Course."
